Reins - 3 year old holiday

Hi my dd is quite a danger to herself, absolute wild child, no sense of danger, doesnt walk just runs, prone to wondering off etc the only way to keep her safe when out is usually a buggy. We got one of those backpack reins for asda and that seemed to do the trick and worked on hand holding whilst on strap. We’re going on holiday and i dont feel that those bags are safe enough for longer walking journeys can be quite flimsy at times. Does anyone have any suggestions between full harness reins / wrist straps? I’ve seen some spring wrist reins on amazon but just worried someone could easily cut the wire or how effective this is to stop danger when just pulling a spring wire? Tia

Cut the wire? You're not leaving her tethered to the bike rack while you go shopping - you'll be right next to her surely? I'm sorry I think I must be confused!

I have a set of Trunki 'Toddlepak' reins and they're fine!

JosieOhNo · 28/04/2023 14:42

Where are you planning on walking where somebody might cut through a child's reins?!

Curtains70 · 28/04/2023 14:47

Aren't reins quite short as obviously you wouldn't want her far away so I don't think being worried about somebody cutting the wire is reasonable.

What danger do you mean? Surely they're just to stop her running off

zingally · 28/04/2023 15:00

Where on earth were you thinking of going where someone might be able to cut the reins and (presumably) do a legger with your DD? In that regard, you're inventing a problem that doesn't exist. Most reins I've seen keep the child within about a metre of the parent. They're not like those extendable dog leads.

By all means though, put her on reins if she's a runner! Both of mine had reins when they were at "run everywhere with my ears closed" stage.

Honestly is there a reason for other mums to be so quick to shut someone down or to judge! I am a severely anxious person taking my daughter abroad for the first time, it is a horrible world we are living in nowadays so for the obvious reasons I want the reins to be the most secure. She is always secured in a buggy at home for various reasons, i want her to be able to roam around and explore on holiday - SAFELY. The reins i have looked at have extremely long leads/springs on them hence why I am worried and looking for advice if anyones used them. If you have nothing helpful to say, DONT comment? Its that simple!

We had a bee backpack that had a material longish handle with a wrist loop for the adult for my DS when he was little. Got it from Aldi’s.

firsttimemxm · 28/04/2023 15:05

Thanks for anyone who has been kind and offered helpful advice it’s appreciated! I’ll pop by my local Aldi

Just wanted to add the bee backpack was sturdy and not flimsy at all.

we’ve also used the springy wrist links and didn’t rate them much as you don’t have that much control walking down the street by a road as the stretch is quite long.

LindyHopathon · 28/04/2023 15:06

OP, I have truly never heard of anyone cutting through reins so that they could abduct a toddler.

When my DC were young I used ordinary reins.

ChocHotolate · 28/04/2023 15:08

Won't it be a trip hazard to everyone else if the leads are extremely long?

takealettermsjones · 28/04/2023 15:09

If she's on very long reins though she could run into a road anyway? I'm still confused tbh.

PineappleLatte · 28/04/2023 15:09

OP….
”I want the most secure”

Followed by

”I’ll pop to Aldi”

😂

Thats obviously why i’m asking of peoples experience who have used them!

Nobody is going to cut your daughters reins off her how far ahead is she likely to be ? Reins have to be of standard they are not flimsy . Try see if you can get old .fashioned leather reins or maybe insist she goes in a stroller if she's a bolter you can strap her in and also.have her reins on.

I don't think any part of what you're asking is obvious to be honest but I'm going to step out now lest I get called an arsehole as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

😮

Curtains70 · 28/04/2023 15:15

In all honesty I think she would be more unsafe on a really long one. Just get an old fashioned short one. They're not an anti kidnap device, she should still be right by you when you're walking

Mrsjayy · 28/04/2023 15:16

Calling people who are trying to understand and help you arseholes isn't going to get far

Is this why dd is always doing a runner?

I think perhaps you've accidentally posted this in aibu rather than chat, and are therefore getting aibu type responses. I'd ask mn to move it...

I was pointing out quite a contradiction in what you are expecting.

Bobbybobbins · 28/04/2023 15:22

We still use backpack reins for my DS9 and 7 who have severe learning disabilities and they seem very secure but also comfortable - they are trespass brand.
