Does anyone ever have more than one book they are reading on the go at once?

Do you always finish a book before you start another, or do you have more than one at a time your reading?

I do sometimes. It’a usually one factual book (out of choice) and simultaneously one fiction book for me.

I usually have about 4 on the go. A main one in the sitting room, one in each bathroom, and one in the car. There are a couple by the bed too, but they're for casual dipping in, so I don't count those, as I don't literally read them from beginning to end. The main one I'd normally get through in a week, with the others taking a month or so to read on average. I don't stick with books I don't really enjoy. Life's too short.

Generally at several at any time

  • something fairly uplifting/easy for reading as I fall asleep
  • a decent literary novel /classic
  • a non fiction book or two

If I'm enjoying reading a particular book then that's it, I'm not interested in reading another and I'm a bit disappointed when I reach the end, I never want a really good book to end. Less riveting books - I can have several on the go at once.

I usually have 3 on the go - one fiction, one non-fiction, and an audiobook (usually but not always non-fiction) for when I can't sleep.

I have my kindle book which I read on my phone while eating lunch or dinner

I have my paperback which I read in bed

And I have my audiobook which I read when out walking

So, always 3!

I appear to have several on the go at once but the reality is that there is one I’m actually into and the others are ones I’ve started but haven’t admitted to myself that I don’t want to particularly read them.

Ditto.

Bookworm333 · 28/04/2023 18:29

Yep, 1 or 2 on the libby app, usually a physical library book, and then I might have a kindle book and/or a real book - usually the kindle books and real books get hastily put aside to finish a library book I can't renew, and then picked up again later when I have the time! I find library books are actually really helpful to keep me reading as having a deadline of sorts means I make more of an effort instead of e.g. spending too much time on mumsnet! 🤣

MargaretThursday · 28/04/2023 18:34

It's only when I get a new book that I'll exclusively read it through. Normally now I pick up one that I know and love and read a couple of chapters and then I might move to another book.

madamehooch · 28/04/2023 19:27

I have my main read and a 'lunchtime' book. I am a voracious reader but I cannot concentrate on anything unfamiliar whilst I'm eating - consequently, a 'lunchtime' book is something I have read backwards and forwards and inside out. It is also usually smothered in greasy finger prints and crisp crumbs. That's my naughty little secret; usually, I come over all unnecessary at the sight of a turned-down corner...

Oo I didn’t count audiobooks! Usually got one of those on the go as well!

yoga4meinthemorning · 28/04/2023 22:41

I always have a half dozen in the go at once. Then some never get finished as I find new ones I'm more interested in.

MiningForYou · 28/04/2023 22:51

I separate books by device. One audio, one Kindle and one physical. I can keep them separate in my head because of the different devices. If I were doing two kindle books it doesn’t work for me.

HowManySunflowers · 28/04/2023 22:52

I have one on kindle and one audiobook.
