To refuse to sleep on the Mall? 👑

PolkaDotMankini · 27/04/2023 19:01

10yo DD desperately wants to sleep overnight on the Mall so she can see the king going past in his golden carriage. I rashly said last year (when I refused to take her to QEII's funeral) that I'd consider it.

But I don't want to. It's raining and cold. It means sleeping on the ground. It will be packed, the loos will be grim and we'll lose our place when we use them. We'll be surrounded by royalist nutters screaming "We love you, King Charles!" and knuckling their foreheads. We'd get a much better view on TV in the comfort of our own home.

I couldn't care less about the monarchy, other than that the parades are cool and I don't see how they could possibly do a worse job than an elected politician.

DD is very disappointed. AIBU to say no and tell her she can go to William's coronation when she'll likely be old enough to sort it out herself?

She's a 10yo girl who likes princesses and unicorns

If she was a boy would you be encouraging these bizarre interests??

@vera99 that's just under £4 a head each. Less than a glass of wine. I reckon I pay double that per day for the NHS and have done for the last 40 odd years.

I know who I'd rather clap for.

32 million taxpayers in the UK so 8 each.

I'd rather set fire to a tenner than see it spent on those fuckers.

Agree.

We should probably bung in the price of the Bank Holiday as well. Which this article estimates at £2.3 billion so total now £2.5 billion using Sofia's 32 million taxpayers we are up to 78 quid per head now or 160 quid per household. That money could have gone to your child's school to help with the cost of living crisis. But no, gold coaches - anointing we are not allowed to view and them lording it literally over us. Baah, humbug.

How Much Will King Charles’ Coronation Cost?

His big day is estimated to be double that of the late Queen...

@vera99 hear, hear.

So many fare more important causes that this money could have been spent on.

vera99 · 03/05/2023 19:05

If I hear a gusto version of God Save the King on Saturday from my fellow Britons I will truly feel like I'm in a foreign land. Unrecalcitrant malcontent that I am. Might become a Catholic briefly as a protest against the CoE and at least the Pope is elected by the Cardinals for his sins and in the modern era has then option to retire.

I just saw this article: https://metro.co.uk/2023/05/04/royal-fans-arrive-all-the-way-from-the-us-to-camp-outside-buckingham-palace-18721634/?ito=article.mweb.share.top.link

People are already there and have been camping for days! Days! This has convinced me that we wouldn't have had a hope in hell of getting a decent view on Saturday morning, and that my suspicion that we'd be surrounded by nutters was entirely correct.

Royal fans arrive all the way from the US to camp outside Buckingham Palace

We love the commitment.

Surrounded by nutters? That’s a bit harsh…

Where do you wash eat and go to the loo?

Not really. It's substantiated by the evidence I've seen so far: camping on the street for a week, 84-year old camping out like she did for QEII's coronation, flying in from the US with a specially printed "Americans love King Charles" flag to adorn your street tent... Yep, nuts.

There’s always a few, but surrounded by butters isn’t accurate… majority turned up this morning.

Flowertight · 06/05/2023 22:56

Also the clip doing the rounds showing the crowd falling over themselves to excuse Andrew’s alleged sexual offences is pretty good evidence

KarmaStar · 07/05/2023 11:00

It's all over now.I hope you went with her and gave her memories that will last her whole life time.

I've just seen that. Absolutely mind blowing.

As was the commentary from Americans in the crowds (as if it's anything whatsoever to do with them) about how Andrew should be there but Harry shouldn't.
