To ask is puppy fat a myth

My DS has delayed puberty at 15 (he’s under the care of an endocrinologist) - he’s recently put on a bit of weight- he is really active - averages 25,000 steps a day walking back & for to school & playing footy at lunch. Also does footy 3 times a week in training & playing for a team & goes to a gym once a week.

So pretty active & eats well at home at least - everything home cooked and is a veggie. I don’t think what he buys in school is that great though.

So is it puppy fat a thing? I did put on weight before puberty & then grew. He’s small height wise for his age. But activity wise he’s doing what he’s always done. The weight gain is very noticeable. I feel like nothing has really changed but he’s still putting on weight.

i dont think so, my daughter has always put some weight on and got a bit pudgy just before she grows.

I think puppy fat is a thing. I was chubby as a tween/young teen but I’m slim as as adult. One of my now adult children was the same.

I found that kids would get wider & then suddenly shoot up in height & be skinny!

buckingmad · 26/04/2023 19:41

I wasn’t chubby as a teen but had some extra cushion. I was a stone lighter at 21 than I was at 17 and nothing else had changed. Have always been active.

Looking a little softer and rounder just before a growth spurt, yes normal.

However developing a tummy, moobs, double chin etc is definitely beyond puppy fat IMO and isn’t going to just disappear.

So depends how much weight gain you are talking …

I think it’s real, a lot of DC seem to grief out and then up but their weight stays the same.

Depends how much weight and how much you expect his height gain to be.

I think high activity levels are great but if he was consuming an extra 2000 calories in junk for example, you can't out walk that.

I think there is a difference between puppy fat and being overweight (speaking as someone who was always the fat child, teen and adult)
I think all children have a soft roundness to them and as they grow their features become more defined, they lose that 'childish' look.
My son is 18, he is very active, does a bit of weights but not much, he is definitely more chiselled, his facial features are sharper, than he was at 11 or 12.

avocadotofu · 26/04/2023 19:55

I definitely think it is a thing. My son always chubs out a bit before he grows.

Bemyclementine · 26/04/2023 19:58

I think its a real thing. I was a skinny chikd at 11/12, seemed to change into a large spotty teenager with boobs at 13. By 15 I was skinny.

Asosbabe · 26/04/2023 19:59

I think it can be a thing. My skinny son got very plump at about that age and then shot up in height and is now going again

Asosbabe · 26/04/2023 19:59

Thin again, not going again

WonderingWanda · 26/04/2023 20:19

My kids always put on a bit of weight before a growth spurt! They are slim but muscled (lots of gym and swimming) not skinny. I think like me they may gain weight easily but also have the ability to build muscle quickly and burn it off.
