How much would you tidy whilst at an air bnb for 3 weeks?

Seem to be having a bit of a disconnect with DP re cleaning.

We're staying at a cottage in the country for 3 weeks. Cleaner comes weekly.

As much as I would like to stop cleaning completely I'm not comfortable/able to relax when there is a mess.

Each day I hoover, mop (dog and muddy walks). I'm a tidy up as you go along type person I.e wipe bathroom sink whilst brushing teeth, give fridge a wipe whilst waiting for kettle.

DP has told me to calm down. All I have asked is for him and others to do is fold sofa blankets, arrange pillows when they get up and put dihes in dishwasher (which I take responsibility for). Anuthing less feels untidy. Not too much imo

i wouldn’t clean at all beyond the washing up and wiping up after cooking. Certainly not mopping!

W0tnow · 26/04/2023 13:29

Well, not nothing, but less than you.

ZacharinaQuack · 26/04/2023 13:30

I wouldn't be bothered about the cushions being arranged, but I'd be pissed off if my family weren't putting things in the dishwasher. Or are they expecting that to be done weekly by the cleaner?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2023 13:30

Sounds like you're doing more while on holiday than I'd want to do at home.

But if you don't feel relaxed if things aren't up to your standards, then I guess it's up to you to do what you want, but maybe cut the rest of your family some slack if they're not bothered about blankets and pillows.

bananaboats · 26/04/2023 13:31

I'd wash dishes, make beds and generally tidy up after myself but nothing more especially not mopping etc

Boussa · 26/04/2023 13:31

I wouldn't mop if it wasn't for large breed dog with long hair

dietcokelime · 26/04/2023 13:31

Dishes away and mopping up dirt from a wet dog just keeps things pleasant for you all to enjoy for three weeks surely?

Sounds normal to me, being on holiday somewhere wouldn't be relaxing for me if it was turning into a jumble!

JudgeRudy · 26/04/2023 13:31

Clean as much or as little as you want provided nothings getting damaged.

Newuser82 · 26/04/2023 13:33

I would do what you are doing. With having dogs myself I know how quickly they can mess the place up and I wouldn't feel happy leaving the floor muddy and hairy. I'm not sure I'd wipe the fridge though.

CovetedAsFuck · 26/04/2023 13:33

Dishes, kitchen/bathroom surfaces, a moderate bit of sweeping and very occasional hoovering is what I’d expect us all to help with. We don’t have a dog though.

And basic laundry.

I wouldn’t ask people to faff with the presentation of blankets and pillows every time they use them — that doesn’t sound relaxing.

RoxanaRoxana · 26/04/2023 13:34

Will your holiday honestly be worse if you don’t arrange pillows?

If there’s actual dirt, then sure clean that. And daily tasks like the dishwasher need doing.

But it sounds like you’re going way over board and I can see why your family are fed up!

Saschka · 26/04/2023 13:34

Dishes, wiping down counters, sweeping up actual spills. Making beds in the morning (and I would change the sheets if you are there 3 weeks). Putting sofa cushions back in place is just basic tidying up, which I would do each night.

No hoovering, no cleaning bathroom or kitchen beyond basic wiping down, no mopping, no dusting.

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/04/2023 13:38

I personally don't like living in a complete tip as I find it hard to relax so I wouldn't totally let go. I'd tidy general stuff left around (clothes, boots, toys), wash up after meals and put away.

I certainly wouldn't mop and probably wouldn't hoover. And I think mithering people about folding upholstery on holiday is a bit OTT to be honest.

Happy Birthday GIF by Jelene

If the dog creates that much dirt/mess and is a family dog then it's not just your responsibility.
I would expect everyone to put dishes in the dishwasher and take turns to empty it.

If no dog involved I might sweep the floor occasionally but would only mop if there was a spillage (given that cleaner comes).

I wouldn't do more than that and wouldn't care about blankets or pillows, or beds made, you don't even need to go into the DC bedrooms in a holiday cottage.

domesticgodmess · 26/04/2023 13:49

Sorry for the big Happy Birthday gif!

BarbaraofSeville · 26/04/2023 13:54

I wouldn't do anything at all, except maybe clean up the worst of the dog hair/mud so it's not too awful for the cleaners. After all, if you're out and about each day with a dog, it's going to be getting mucky faster than you can clean it up so what's the point trying to keep the place spotless?

But I'm not surprised your DH has told you to calm down. They didn't go on holiday to spend it faffing with pillows and blankets FFS.

You're on holiday and the place is being cleaned weekly. Apart from keeping the kitchen usable, nothing else is necessary, so why not enjoy your holiday instead of playing the martyr?

Folding blankets/arranging cushions before going to bed takes less than a min! Much nicer to come down to

If it’s you who wants it done and it’s so quick you should do it. It’s not part of the common suite of minimum expectations people should uphold on holiday. You’d drive me nuts.

Maybe. But it's very much a "you" thing which isn't hygiene or quality of life related, doesn't seem impact the rest of your family and I think it seems a bit micro-managey to be nagging people about this on holiday.

I can imagine wanting to do it myself but I wouldn't be on at other people about it on hols.

Irisandillies · 26/04/2023 14:07

Can’t you clean the dogs paws before he comes in. I can’t imagine hoovering and mopping every day.

Boussa · 26/04/2023 14:01

Why?

You only have to unfold things again if you want to use them. Most people 'come down' to start getting the coffee on and feeding the dogs, not to admire the arrangement of the cushions.

Tinybrother · 26/04/2023 14:12

I would obviously wipe kitchen surfaces after meals, dishes etc and clean visibly muddy floors at the end of the day, wouldn’t bother with bathroom and certainly not wiping fridge. Family should all be helping with meals and teas/coffees etc, either preparing or cleaning.

Tinybrother · 26/04/2023 14:14

I wouldn’t bother enforcing blanket folding and cushion straightening, I’d probably do that myself in the morning if i had gone to bed before everyone else and I was the only one bothered. I’d be irritated by dirty glasses/cups/plates left to be dealt with in the morning though

Flavabobble · 26/04/2023 14:22

I'm tidier on holiday than I am at home and would enjoy (don't judge me!!) tidying, folding blankets ready for morning, and washing up. At home we have a dishwasher that is everyone else's responsibility. So it's almost a novelty.
I think it's to do with the minimalistic style of most holiday lets, I'm imagining myself as the sort of person who is super-organised.
I wouldn't be making anyone else do any of that though, until we were leaving.

Quitelikeacatslife · 26/04/2023 21:25

I think I'm tidier on holiday too, it's just keeping it nice so I can keep relaxing. I'd expect family to put things in dishwasher and bin and tidy something up if they've used it, not leave stuff lying around (like massive teenage trainers) but I wouldn't stress with them
