To think there are more potholes than usual?

More potholes but always roadworks...why?

OP posts:
Bluevelvetsofa · 26/04/2023 14:19

A combination of a very dry summer and relentless subsequent rain maybe.

It’s a hot topic here, with no roads unaffected. Some roads are virtually impassable and it’s very dangerous for motorbikes and cycles. The repairs are always bodged too, so last a couple of weeks before they fail again.

Roadworks are everywhere, usually with no one actually working, but three and four way temporary traffic lights. One road advertised a 22 week road programme in November. It’s very close to the supposed end of that time, but nowhere near the end of the work. Some places are no go areas altogether, with roadworks for more than two years. One was scheduled to finish early 2022. Still there.

malificent7 · 28/04/2023 07:32

Anyone else found this? I guess it is weather related.

OP posts:
Stillwearingskinnys · 28/04/2023 07:36

I have noticed they are terrible where we live, seems to be all of a sudden which is strange.

Loads of posts on the local Facebook group about it.

Must be due to the hot summer….

Brazilagogo · 28/04/2023 07:36

It’s a combination of weather causing them and councils not fixing them with decent materials or at all because of lack of funds. It feels li8e driving round a slalom course at times near here.

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2023 07:41

They are dreadful in my area, I started taking a different route to supermarket to avoid dodgy road but now my alternative route is even worse. Big enough to do serious damage in a car and potentially fatal on a bike

Ankleblisters · 28/04/2023 07:44

I agree re weather. I've also read the roads are designed for lighter vehicles and there are a lot more lorries (delivery and builders) and a massive increase in the number of heavy weight SUVs, at least around here, which are having a big impact of the rate of wear and tear on the roads. If I made the rules heavier family/personal vehicles would pay more for parking and a higher rate of road tax.

HowManySunflowers · 28/04/2023 07:45

Yes it's terrible near me. Some really bad ones.

Unicorn2022 · 28/04/2023 07:46

I was just saying this yesterday. I'm in east London and there seem to be huge potholes everywhere now. Really hard to dodge them in some of the roads,

DejaVoodoo · 28/04/2023 07:48

Yep. It's a nightmare where I am. The roads are a right state. I even saw a biggish one on the motorway last week.
The country is getting shitter by the day.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 28/04/2023 07:48

Waaaay more. And here, roadworks are mostly related to new build estates going up, and they’re not fixing the roads whilst they’re closed, so there will be even more traffic on even worse roads. 🤷‍♀️

Willmafrockfit · 28/04/2023 07:50

it is just appalling
i counted 45 on my journey to work the other month!
so dangerous.

gertrudemortimer · 28/04/2023 07:55

I was in Chester and surrounding areas the other week and I've never seen roads as bad in this country.

TookTheBook · 28/04/2023 07:56

Yes I was thinking this to myself yesterday! It's not just perception, there really do seem to be loads more than I remember, it's like the council just isn't bothering to mend any. I assume no funding.

Alexandra2001 · 28/04/2023 07:56

Around here, Cornwall, the roads are awful, utilities dig them up and the repairs they do are simply not good enough, so the road deteriorates, utilities should be forced to resurface the entire road, not just the trench they ve dug.

In some places the roads foundation has been exposed.

But the biggest reason is that Councils have not resurfaced roads within the roads life cycle & the tarmac we seem to use in the uk isn't of a high standard.

Why? central Govt has cut funding to councils...

There is a £25 billion back log in repairs.

But whats really annoying is a road is resurfaced and 18 months later National Grid come along and dig it up..grrrrr. A386 and A388 are too recent examples.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 28/04/2023 07:58

I was taking to my dh about this the other day and said exactly the same thing op. The roads near us have never been brilliant but they are full of pot holes at the moment

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/04/2023 07:59

They're awful here too - and the council aren't repairing them -or if they are, they seem be focusing on the tiny ones, and not the massive craters 🙄

We have a massive one just before a bend on an NSL road that's been marked by a traffic cone for months now 🤷‍♀️

Owchy · 28/04/2023 08:04

Noticeably a lot more potholes near me, in fact I would call them craters. HUGE and quite deep holes all over the place and worse when it rains as unless you know the road it just looks like puddles. One road scheduled for repair you can’t really cycle on and need to drive very slowly and weave around. Super dangerous.

Justcashnosweets · 28/04/2023 08:05

The roads are awful around where I live. I live rurally but the roads are well used. Not only massive potholes that shred peoples tyres frequently, but road surfaces breaking up, and what look like sinkholes and collapsed areas at the side of them. Its so dangerous.

Whinge · 28/04/2023 08:07

A busy road near me was closed recently for resurfacing. It opened and there was a huge discussion on the local facebook page about how amazing it was to drive on a smooth pothole free road.

I'm not joking when I say it took less than a week for utilities companies to come and and dig up several sections of the road, as well as causing chaos with temporary traffic lights. It's now back to being full of potholes, and is worse to drive on than it was prior to the resurfacing work.

dittbtdity · 28/04/2023 08:08

The roads where I live, Sw London, have more potholes than tarmac. Given that lime bikes and scooters for hire are everywhere and cycling is a clean alternative to driving it's ironic that roads are so dangerous for cyclists.

Owchy · 28/04/2023 08:13

As another poster has said, we had the pavements on our road resurfaced end of last summer. Very nice. In March this year the utilities came and dug a line down the whole road.

Seriously piss poor planning and a waste of natural resources and money.

MoonahSton · 28/04/2023 08:14

Awful round here, you see cars trying swerve round them all the time but there's too many to avoid.
Our car went in for a service last week and discovered one of the suspension springs had snapped. The bloke said it was probably caused by a pot hole.
£650 to fix

jgw1 · 28/04/2023 08:16

malificent7 · 26/04/2023 09:32

More potholes but always roadworks...why?

Another success story for 13 years of Tory governments.
Not only do we have record numbers of police officers, we have record numbers of pot holes as well. An absolute triumph.

LuckyStone · 28/04/2023 08:17

Get the bastard government out then, stop voting for these corrupt thieves.

Deathbyfluffy · 28/04/2023 08:18

There are perhaps a few more than usual, but the big issue is car manufacturer's obsession with 'low profile' tyres.
They want to fit bigger alloy wheels for the 'show' factor which means the tyre itself is thinner - making potholes much more obvious (as there's less give in a thinner tyre) and also the alloy wheel itself much more prone to cracking.

It's a real problem, and while the roads should be suitable for all cars they're just not at the moment.
