to not understand how to tumble dry clothes nicely?

I don’t understand it. Please someone tell me what I’m doing wrong.

All I can read is how tumble drying is great, leaves clothes without creases, makes towels fluffy….all of that.

I use nice tablets and fabric conditioner- my tumble dried washing is always crumpled, as if creases were ironed in and feels absolutely rough.

Am I overfilling it?

do I need to take it out immediately?

High crease stuff - give it what I call a Snap Shake before putting it in (think cracking a whip movement)
Don't overfill.
Take out immediately, snap shake again, hang up

IlIlI · 25/04/2023 09:18

I always had the same! Now I either shake some items out halfway through or at the end whilst they're still warm, that helps a lot. Leaving them in too long after it has stopped can leave creases sometimes too.

Smaller loads help too, but I don't always do that unless I have to take out specific items that can't be tumble dried.

Beginningless · 25/04/2023 09:19

sounds like maybe you have it too hot, on too long, or both? I’d set a shorter cycle or interrupt the cycle to check the point when things are only just dry. Then immediately shake/hang.

HarpendenHarpendenHarpenden · 25/04/2023 09:19

Don't use fabric softener with towels. You won't get them to fluff up if you use it.

Hugasauras · 25/04/2023 09:19

Maybe it's your dryer? I've never done anything special with our cheap Beko one and nothing comes out creased or rough. Maybe it's a hard water thing from the actual washing machine?

i have a combi thing- i have two options. High heat or low heat. It adjusts automatically for time depending on weight but I can’t stop the cycle midway to check.

Maybe I need a proper tumble

My towels feel like Jacob’s cream crackers

Agreed. Don't overfill the drum and make sure you remove everything from the dryer as quickly as possible after the cycle ends and get everything folded/hung. If the clothes are in a crumpled pile when they cool down you'll have a wrinkle fest.

Soontobe60 · 25/04/2023 09:22

My dryer is fantastic - it has a setting called wear ready, which means the clothes don’t come out like a crumpled bag of jumble. You just press the button and it works out how long to dry for so no need for a timer. However, I don’t over fill it and I don’t put things like towels and t shirts in together. I also do the ‘snap’ and fill thing.
I found that if you put different weight items together, the lighter ones get over dried. So I sort my washing accordingly,

GrumpyPanda · 25/04/2023 09:24

Tumble dryers don't magically de-crease clothes, where did you get that?

Dress shirts are better off drip-drying after a very low spin wash. You could give them a short turn in the dryer first, say 15 minutes by themselves.

T-shirts - fine for tumble-dry but don't overfill and don't put in with much heavier items. In general dryers take lower loads than washers, so be aware.

Hugasauras · 25/04/2023 09:25

Oh is it a washer dryer? I had one of those once and it crumpled and creased everything so badly you couldn't even iron it out without spending hours.

Hugasauras · 25/04/2023 09:25

Also washer dryers often take a much smaller drying load than washing so you have to take like half the load out to dry, if you've got a full load.

I didn't know for years but I noticed a big difference. You have to get them bone dry in the dryer, but you can save energy if you take them out for a bit and let them dry naturally a while before blasting. They'll be super absorbent too.

Oh no dryer sheets either, if you use those.

Sotired22 · 25/04/2023 09:33

I found the same when I had a washer dryer. I think they’re just not very good unfortunately. I now have a separate dryer and it’s much better.

LadyJ2023 · 25/04/2023 09:55

I dont add anything into our dryer. Always lovely soft and ready to fold when done. Maybe your using wrong setting or over filling it

LadyJ2023 · 25/04/2023 09:56

Oh I just read washer/dryer thing...tbh we had 2 and never again would I have another. They always came creased and horrible from that now we have separate.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/04/2023 09:59

Mine does.

If it's a washer /drier then I think that just what they do, I've used them in holiday cottages and the washing has come out really creased.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2023 10:09

I've always found the same OP (we have a normal condensing dryer and are in a soft water area). We have a tumble dryer but hardly ever use it because everything comes out a creased and shrunken mess.

I hang up all my clothes to dry, or put them on the airer if it's not line drying weather. We will do sheets, towels and sometimes socks and pants if we CBA with the socktopus. DP sometimes puts his jeans and t-shirts in there.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/04/2023 10:14

I also have a combi washer dryer. I loathe it but it wasn’t my choice. I usually take about half the load out to air dry because a full wash load is just too much for the dryer function to cope with. I only really do pants and socks, gym gear and pyjamas in the dryer.

sashh · 25/04/2023 10:51

If it's a washer dryer it will only dry (usually) a half load.

CombatBarbie · 25/04/2023 11:16

Washer dryers are a nightmare. I had one in a rented flat and everything was so creased. Would never willingly buy one.

hermioneee · 25/04/2023 11:24

The combi things are useful but the manual tells you (or at least our old one did) it only does half the load of your washing, so you need to take half out and hang up or only use it when you really need something drying quickly. Your clothes will be crumpled as there isn't enough space in there.

helpmum2003 · 25/04/2023 11:54

Using too much powder can make things stiff. It doesn't get rinsed out properly. May be worth checking that.

Aria2015 · 25/04/2023 11:56

Don't overfill and get the clothes out quick once it's finished and they're still warm and you can give them a shake and fold them crease free!

Nordicrain · 25/04/2023 12:03

I don't think washer/ dryers work very well generally. I never had any luck with them.
