to say that beeping won't make me move any faster you twat.

On school run this morning. There's a right turn into a busy road. I've done that particular turn literally hundreds of times and am very good at judging the gaps to pull out. This morning some asshole in a minibus behind me starts beeping to "encourage" me to pull out sooner.

The same asshole stayed behind me and beeped again for observing the 20 limit (residential road, school morning!) and again when I pulled in to let a wide vehicle come through a narrow part with cars parked on both sides.

I'm sorry, but I will be the judge of what is safe for my family and just because you may be less risk averse than I am doesn't mean you can dictate how I drive.

Why do people do this? What makes them think that a horn in my ear is going to encourage me to move? I've been driving 30 years but an inexperienced driver could easily get flustered by it and pull out under pressure when not safe.

I know for a fact that I was driving relatively cautiously, but not unreasonably so. I am now going to get 100 responses saying "Driving slowly is just as dangerous as driving fast, you must have been in the wrong, you don't even realise how bad a driver you are, over-cautious drivers are a menace, go on an advanced driving course to learn how to drive more confidently". Trust me on this, my driving was absolutely fine.

So AIBU to want a sign that pops up in my back window for these occasions that says "Fuck off you twat!"?

Yanbu.

I had this during my driving test! Yes, my actual test! The tester got out and gave the guy a mouthful.

In some ways you sound like a bit of a nightmare driver to be honest.

DilemmaADay · 25/04/2023 12:39

There's definitely two categories of people here. The people like my DF who do 60 on a motorway and swear at other drivers who pass him (very safely at 70 with indicators) and call them mental for speeding. When in fact they're doing the speed limit, he's just never wrong.

Then there's always the idiots who race past you when you're doing the speed limit or a little over , aggressively pull back in then end up waiting at the same set of traffic lights as you with a sheepish look on their face.

Nordicrain · 25/04/2023 12:51

That would incline me to slow down even more. I can be a bit passive agressive like that though.

Why, because she won't drive dangerously to appease a bellend who wants to drive like a twat? OP has done nothing wrong

Someone asked about this exact scenario on a speed awareness course I was on. The instructor said his way of dealing with it was to completely ignore the beeper, whilst simultaneously slowing down further. His advice was never speed up and never get into an altercation. If they want to tie themselves up into angry, stressed knots, let them get on with it.

This is great advice. Those guys (many ex-police) who run those courses are super cool.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 25/04/2023 13:08

Oh I like being beeped, it means we all get to go 5mph slower as a treat.

Cincinnatus · 25/04/2023 13:09

Since we’ve had front and back (especially the back) dash cams fitted, I’ve noticed people behaving a lot better. People hate being recorded.

Must have been something in the air this morning op. I had an unpleasant encounter with an utter moron who didn’t think I was moving quick enough pulling out of a junction. How dare I check both ways are safe before pulling out!

Exactly. And the idea that they have a better view than you!

@Cincinnatus I have noticed this to but on my bike. I have had a front camera for a couple of years and have made a few police reports from it. However I noticed a much bigger difference in driver behaviour around me when I started using a camera sign on the back of my bike.

Glad it’s making you feel a bit more safe and they are behaving! I see some terrible behaviour around cyclists sometimes.

I know this is going to piss a few people off on here and people are going to throw shade on me (coz the bad drivers, the dickheads, and the tailgaters WILL slate me for it,) but I do not give a flying shiny SHIT...

When people beep me to go faster or drive up my arse, when I am doing the speed limit, (or maybe 5 miles per hour below it ...) I go slower. SLOWER... The closer you get to me, the more you harass me and hound me, the more you bug me, and the more you wave your fist in your windscreen, the slower I will go ....

I will not be intimidated, I will not succumb to demands to go faster, (and break the SPEED LIMIT,) I will go slower, I will annoy you more and more and more, and you will arrive even later to your destination, than you would have if you just left me alone, and let me do THE SPEED LIMIT.

Oh @ChocChipHandbag YANBU obviously! Like you, I have been driving many years (around 30,) and am a very confident driver. I will NOT be intimidated by wankers and dickheads who demand I go faster because they want me to, even if it means breaking the speed limit.

No idea why these arseholes think they have the right to intimidate and bully people into breaking the speed limit. Doesn't work with me, as I said, I just go slower, and slower. They're absolute fuckwits if they think they can bully or intimidate ME!

And anyone thinking of attacking me or questioning me or berating me for doing this, don't waste your time, because I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ANYONE'S OPINIONS about me doing this. And I will NOT respond to your posts.

Hmm, devil's advocate here. If you're going 5mph slower then tbh you're being a bit of a pita.
I don't tailgate however those pottling about are a rolling roadblock.

Yep. This is what I do. We have a dual carriageway here in which the left hand lane peels off to a different road so you need to stay in the right hand lane to go straight on. A few weeks ago at about 10pm in lashing rain I had some arsehole flashing away at me while I was driving at a speed suitable for the conditions. I just slowed down a tiny bit and kept on going ignoring the frantic flashing.
