To ask if you've fainted

I've always had lowish blood pressure and have had a number of funny turns - pre stage of a faint, head hot, dizzy, desire to lie down right now in the middle of this shop sort of thing.

Today however I experienced a true faint three times, properly losing conscience.

Has this happened to you? I keeled over and was launched into a lovely dream each time (now forgotten), that seemed to last ages - long enough to be really calming.

Husband said I was out for only about 10/15 seconds each time and he was calling me to wake up - I heard nothing - but woke to find him lifting me onto a bench or into the car each time.

I couldn't help but wonder why he didn't leave me in the lovely dream, it was much better than feeling so ill.

Why do we as a rule rush to wake fainters?

In the ambulance they were keen to keep me awake too.

No, never.

I have had three 'episodes' where the world went like the 'snow' on a tv screen. Once when I was about 15, and twice when I was 24 and pregnant.

Custardbanana · 24/04/2023 23:22

At least a dozen times. A couple of times I can feel it coming with that white noise and wave of heat and I've got myself to floor so it's less of a fall.

JimBob61 · 24/04/2023 23:24

Not a faint as such but I few years ago I was bleeding excessively. Dh called an ambulance and I said I was fine to walk from our bedroom down the stairs to get in it.
Got to the top of the stairs and everything went black although I was still standing and conscious. All of a sudden I literally felt the blood whoosh out of my arms. I remember saying it's all black and I can't feel my arms before passing out. I came round in the ambulance.
Dh was understandably terrified.

Roundandnour · 24/04/2023 23:25

Anemia. Low blood pressure low sugar. Not eating/drinking enough. Extreme heat and more result in me fainting.

Been fainting since I was a child. Have broken bones and concussion as a result on more than one occasion. Have gone down stairs more times than I can remember.

I do everything possible to not faint like stayed in on the hottest days last year. Make sure I always have water with me and more.

As a child I was eventually barred from doing hand stands as these also end up with me feinting. Used to do them to get out of school/lessons 😂 then found out constantly doing cartwheels or spinning did the same 😂 (hated that particular school)

HalloweenGhost · 24/04/2023 23:25

These are interesting responses, thank you.

I don't find sitting helps. I needed to lie down. :-(

I fainted today from blood loss, a miscarriage :-(

Lovely ambulance crew though. I think I was delirious.

I'm a fainter at sight of blood person. Weirdly, if relatively bad (eh trip to minor injuries needed), I'm usually calm and in control during the actual event (adrenalin?), but then fainty afterwards.

Bloody hell! I hope you don't get that anymore x

How lively of you. Thank you. I appreciate that. Glad to say I don't get any of it anymore. 😉 One of the few blessings of being in my 60s.

HamBone · 24/04/2023 23:26

I fainted a few times when pregnant and shortly after giving birth. I could always feel myself “going” and managed to grab hold of furniture before I fell so I didn’t hurt myself/the baby.

DH told me that I had quite a grip when I fainted he had to prise my hand away -I suppose I was literally hanging on for dear life!🤣

carpool · 24/04/2023 23:26

Fainted a few times as a teen/twenties. Once each time when I was pregnant and even now I usually faint if I have a sickness bug.

Elphame · 24/04/2023 23:27

Only once. No dreams for me though. One moment I was feeling a bit hot and funny. Next thing I knew was I waking up on the floor with my friend offering me a glass of water which he made me drink

MadisonAvenue · 24/04/2023 23:27

I’ve never fainted but still remember standing in a queue in a supermarket about 15 minutes after having a blood test and everything went black apart from sparkly white ‘interference’, I recall feeling lightheaded right before that happened and gripping onto the metal edge of the checkout to stop myself from falling.

DecommissionedVag · 24/04/2023 23:27

I fainted once in choir practice when I was eleven. Had felt unwell all day with a rotten head cold and then just hit the deck!

Second time, I was about 15 and did feel very well again. Think I may have been having a very heavy period. I'd just woken up, went to the bathroom. Felt a bit odd and so got on my hands and knees on the floor. Next thing I knew I was coming roundon the bathroom floor. I presume I fainted.

I had a near miss about 9-10 years ago. Was out shopping with my then boyfriend on a hot day. We were waiting for the bus home and I suddenly felt very strange. Realised that I felt faint, so I sat down in the bus shelter with my head between my knees. It took an hour for the feeling to fully subside and I felt exhausted for a couple of days afterwards. It was a truly horrible feeling when I was in the midst of it.

Wheresthisplace · 24/04/2023 23:29

@HalloweenGhost so sorry for you loss. Same thing happened to my DM.

Floralnomad · 24/04/2023 23:29

I’ve fainted many times . The first time I was pregnant with our first , had HG and fainted whilst out with my mum visiting our horses , my stupid mother decided the best thing to do was to revive me by tipping a bottle of lemonade over my head . The night I had the baby I fainted in the bathroom of the post labour ward and smashed my head on the pedestal . The rest have been fairly uneventful .

That sounds quite faint like :-(

Why do we as a rule rush to wake fainters?

What an odd question! Someone witnessing you falling to the floor unconscious doesn't know you are just enjoying some dreams and don't want to be disturbed do they? They don't know its a faint you will hopefully wake from and not a cardiac/respiratory arrest or a stroke! They are trying to wake you to check you are conscious and not dead!!!

So they took you to A&E- what did they diagnose OP? Are you ok now?

I've felt pre-syncopal (pre-faint) twice, but not for 20+yrs and never actually lost consciousness or went to the ground! I was extremally anaemic and didn't know it at the time.

Yes once, on a school trip as a teen - had been smoking some dodgy cigarettes and feeling not great, walked to the buffet queue at a service station and just went. Luckily the bus driver was standing in the queue and caught me 😂

Yep, like many here, fainted a lot tio my mid-life 20s. Now I just get really dizzy and lightheaded.

I fainted at the seaside once. There was a funfair at the opposite end of the beach, I was dreaming I was going round and round on the rollercoaster having great fun. When I came around, I could hear the screams of actual people on the rollercoaster having fun, I just thought I was one of them.🤣

Yes, twice. Felt awful before and wonderful afterwards.

Cantseethewindows · 24/04/2023 23:51

I've felt very faint twice when early stages pregnant with DC 1, went all sweaty and pale and felt this overwhelming urge to lie down. I had a particularly awful bout of D&V last year and was in the shower at 3am and was convinced I was going to go. Just managed to call DH over, who then got to watch me not faint but projectile vomit... I did feel better instantly😅
