For being annoyed I was asked to stand on a bus because of dog allergies?

I went to visit a friend in London today and I took my dog. It's worth noting she is a mini poodle, and hypoallergenic, and well behaved. You can barely even tell she's there. I got on the bus as part of my journey. It was the middle of the day so there were a few empty seats (but not loads).

I got on and sat down, and the woman a few rows behind me said 'can you move , I have a dog allergy'. I apologised and moved a few rows forwards, the furthest forwards I could go and still get a seat.

She then shouted forwards 'not far enough, you're going have to stand at the front'.

I was confused, but did it. I spent the rest of the 35 minute journey standing right at the front of the bus while the woman was 3/4 of the way along, sitting.

I did what she said for the journey, but when I got off I felt annoyed and I'm not sure if I'm justified.

Because businesses seemingly make it clear that they will put the care of the dogs over the care of a paying human, and I don’t like that ethos

But the dog owner is a paying human, dogs don’t go into cafes on their own

If dogs are left at home there are endless complaints about barking, if they’re taken out they’re s nuisance. Pick a lane

I would have told her to get off and wait for the next bus if she’s worried for her health, but then I’m a moody cow these days with far less tolerance now I’m of a certain age. Then got my book out and ignored her.

This!!

I’ve actually NEVER seen a guide dog in rl and I’m 45 ! Only ever seen them on tv so the chances of encountering one when I’m with ds is low (I work full time and we don’t go out that often !) so it’s not something I’m going to worry about !!!!
I know two people with guide dogs who live within 5 minutes walk from my house.

i used to see another chap with a guide dog on the bus going to work.

I’ve seen blind people but not with service dogs - they’ve either had a stick or a carer/relative with them but never a dog . Maybe they just aren’t that common where I’ve lived ?

Yet enter dog friendly establishments and demand the dogs leave 😂 Brilliant.

@Fourteenhouses your entitlement (and ignorance of the law) is jaw dropping

I've never known anyone irl to have such and issue and feel such hatred towards dogs as I have seen on mumsnet threads

Me neither. Definitely not a big thing here in the Yorkshire Dales. I imagine these people to all live sanitised lives, in pristine houses in the city, probably in the South.

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 24/04/2023 22:27

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl it's not entitled to take dogs where they are actually allowed to be though, is it?

Dogs are allowed on public transport, they are allowed in many cafes/pubs.

There are owners that overstep, of course there are, but that could be said of any 'group' of people.

As I explained - there was no sign saying ‘dog friendly’ I thought it was a regular cafe. Apparently it’s ‘local knowledge ‘ that it’s dog friendly

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl

and it's inconsiderate entitled people like you who don't realise that dogs have as much right to be a part of society as you and your children.
I do not like children, I don't try and ban them from public places!

No they don’t.

This society is run by humans, we make laws to primarily protect humans and children, we live in the general consensus that we take care of our fellow human. Dogs are not our equals, wether you like it or not.

We recently had to ask in a cafe for someone with a dog to leave. We were there first as they opened so it was empty. DS is autistic, allergic to dogs and scared of dogs. We had just settled down with food and drinks and two women came in with dogs and ds was distressed .

I immediately spoke to the owner who said ‘well we are dog friendly!’ I said no sorry a child with disabilities comes first. One of the women started saying they had just as much right to be there it was awful.
It seems that everywhere is dog friendly now and it’s not always appropriate

I think you were right to move as requested on the bus OP , maybe she could have asked in a nicer way but was probably stressed if she has an allergy

They had as much right to be there as you did. You were incredibly entitled.

My son is allergic on skin tests to dogs. Itchy eyes and facial swelling.

We carry an antihistamine with us when we got out, and allergy face wipes.

I would never ask anyone to move with their dog unless they were on almost top of us…

She sounds like she was being a bit of a dick.

Yup! And, as the parent of two severely disabled children - both of whom are also autistic- I really hate to play disability top trumps. @Fourteenhouses I find your comments about blindness and Guide Dogs offensive, as well as your lack of regard to the law.

well I'm flabbergasted at this thread! Good luck with getting me and my dog to move or leave if I'm not breaking any rules

Well the owner could see that my autistic child was having a meltdown and understood so asked them to leave.
neither dog was a service dog if any sort so we weren’t affecting anyone else’s disability and the cafe had no signage to say it was dog friendly so it wasn’t something I anticipated happening

Ricardosj · 24/04/2023 22:31

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl
Sorry to disappoint.
Business are starting to see the value of creating dog-friendly venues.
Happy owners are more likely to frequent those establishments, therefore increasing profits. Can't wait for more dog friendly venues just to see people like you lose their heads! 😂
Love my furbabies as much as you love your feral human ones!

Suzi888 · 24/04/2023 22:32

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl actually it was someone who detested dogs that made the comment.

Allergies AND distress due to autism / fear of dogs and last time I checked having a disability is a reason for reasonable adjustments- having a dog doesn’t afford the same rights😂 the cafe owner saw sense and realised that they had to prioritise someone and despite being ‘dog friendly’ accommodated the needs of the person with the rights

Wouldn't reasonable adjustment mean not going into a dog friendly cafe? In this situation the owner of the cafe was wrong.

Why didnt you ask if dogs were allowed in when you went in the cafe? I assume you just didn't think to do so?

No you don’t

Having a dog is not the same as having a child.

It’s fine that you love your dog but this OTT declarations of love and comparing to actual human children is just weird
