To bring 4 month old to the hairdresser with me?

I haven't had my hair done since October and I'd really love to get it done this week before baby's christening and our holiday. I know I've left it late so I'd need to take whatever appointment I can get which means I might not be able to arrange childcare as family aren't nearby and dh is working. If I can get a weekend or evening then it's problem solved but I'm guessing these will likely be booked out by now. It normally takes me 2- 2.5 hrs to get my hair done and my normal hairdressers has just closed down so it's a new smaller salon I'd be trying. Is it unreasonable to ask if I can bring baby with me? He is generally very happy to be out and just watch all round him and he seems to like loud noises like the hairdryer at home. He's also breastfed so I can feed him easily under the cape if I need to but he has just in the last week started getting very interested in reaching things and I'm wondering if I'm just being very overambitious... also don't want to make the hairdressers life harder! Has anyone done it before with an almost 5 month old and any tips or should I just avoid altogether and accept that I'll have roots in the pics.

I just love it when I pay 200 dollars to get my hair dyed (and be pampered and have some me time) that there is a 4 month old whingy baby there

Just no

a baby doesn't belong in a 2 hour long hair appointment.

Mobile hairdresser might work, that's a good suggestion I have never done that before so hadnt thought of it. Only problem is that our shower is currently not working and electrican hasn't been able to pinpoint the problem yet so I've been doing my hair over the bath - I'm assuming they'd need access to a shower for getting the dye out. (This is also why I'm not just doing a box job at home!)

Buy one of these for the kitchen sink!

I was thinking the exact same thing.

The christening and holiday will have been booked for a while so why OP has left it so late book is beyond me. If I was disturbed in the hairdressers (it isn’t cheap), I’d be asking for money off.

I go to the hairdresser for some relaxation and leave my kids because I want me time. It costs £120. One time someone was sat next to me with a baby who cried constantly. I was so upset and angry. Please don't do this, it's so very selfish. Mobile hairdresser will come to your house, you can be relaxed, baby looked after and relaxed, no one else impacted of baby cries.

No.

Chemicals, tiny hairs, are a risk.
But also as a customer, if I went to a salon for some me time and somebody else had a baby in there, I would be really annoyed and complain.

I've never left baby with anyone before this would be the first time if I'm able to get an evening appointment. I have very very limited childcare options so I've been unsure if I could go at all. I've been dying my hair myself at home but with the shower breaking its bit an option for me to do it this week like I'd planned. Plus I can't get to the colour I want by myself.

I took mine a couple of times but not for long appointments like that, the chemicals used in treatments could be an issue (not really a problem with a simple wash cut and quick dry)

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/04/2023 09:32

No! Its utterly selfish!

I took my dd to my hair dressers at 4 months old. I messaged the hair dresser and asked if it was allowed and she was more than welcoming. I fed dd before I left and got her to sleep in the car and safely transitioned to the pram. She slept for the first bit but started to wake as I was having my hair washed. Everyone was friendly and welcoming so it wasn’t a problem of me getting up and walking around with her. Once people started talking to her she was happy!

I took some toys and a play mat to keep her entertained but once she settled after the initial cry she was far too fascinated people watching.

Myeyeballsareonfire · 24/04/2023 09:35

I have brought all of my babies (4 children) to the hairdressers as babies. My youngest is slightly older than your baby and made his first trip as a 4 week old. He sleeps most of the time, but even if awake he’s just looking around. I’ll stop once he’s moving.

I’ve never had any issues whatsoever.

To add, I’m not some sort of CF, I wouldn’t dream of taking children somewhere to ruin people’s ‘experience’ but let’s be realistic, you can hear very little above the constant hum of hairdryers anyway.

Hiddenvoice · 24/04/2023 09:36

Same as @Myeyeballsareonfire - I’m not a cf and checked first. My hair dressers is family friendly so there were quite a few children in. If it was a top salon then I’d maybe have reconsidered.

I rang and checked when they opened today and thankfully they had an evening appointment! He might need to come with to the first 15 or 20 mins before dh can pick him up from there and take him home but the hairdresser was happy with that. Its not a fancy salon, just a small village one and she said they have babies in all the time. But it would be lovely to get a wee evening to myself! Dh will hopefully get away early and baby won't need to come at all fingers crossed.
