To be sick of being sick ever since I’ve had a baby

DC is 10 months, started nursery a month ago.
ever since I’ve become a parent I’ve been constantly ill with colds etc, and since baby has been at nursery we’ve had more colds, bugs, conjunctivitis. I just seen to be catching everything and now I’m back at work it’s just another thing to stress about. I’ve never been so constantly ill in my life and I’m exhausted. I do have low immunity due to an autoimmune disease so I naturally catch things quicker but DH is getting things too.

is this normal? Is this just a part of parenting?

I've been through this. My child started nursery at 3, then missed out on lots of nursery and started reception after lockdowns and we were floored that first term of school. He caught chickenpox, covid, impetigo bloody everything. Year 1 has been much better for us.

I have a 10 month old and an autoimmune condition too and I so feel your pain! Baby just seems to constantly have a cold… I’m lucky I managed to escape the first ever sickness bug though!

LuvSmallDogs · 23/04/2023 23:33

Yes, you often hear of kids starting nursery and immediately bringing home every unfamiliar germ to share with mum and dad, who often end up feeling worse/suffering longer than their darling little plague rat!

You'll find that once DC has been there a while, constant bugs will settle down as your immune systems adjust.

SparklyBlackKitten · 23/04/2023 23:39

Isnt that common knowledge?
Baby goes to daycare. Baby gets sick every 2 seconds.

The joys of having kids.

LadyJ2023 · 24/04/2023 00:34

It's not just you me and hubby said exact same before Xmas always one in the family is sick and for the last 4 weeks all 4 kids have been sick which has been very hard.

Hazelnuttella · 24/04/2023 02:39

I did get lots of illnesses when my DS started nursery. First 3 months were the worst then it settled down.

Might be worth getting your iron levels checked if you’re always exhausted. I had low iron probably ever since I was pregnant but didn’t get check until my DS was 18 months, just assumed I was knackered from the lack of sleep when he was younger.

Hi @cherrybakewell17 i totally hear you 😟
I have a 6 month old and i'm just recovering from a third round of the worst cold ever and this time round i got larangitus, totally lost my voice which i've never had in my life.
I keep telling myself all this will make my immune system stronger x

AlltheFs · 24/04/2023 04:57

You can look forward to an average of 12 illnesses a year on average until they start school according to my GP. It’s certainly our experience.
We are all constantly ill, and DD has been going for 2.5 years now!

Thehonestbadger · 24/04/2023 05:20

Yes. It’s totally normal.

Around this time last year we were just starting to emerge from what was quite honestly around 5/6 months of CONSTANT illness. I mean we were not even getting a couple of days between stuff to recover. It was awful. We had a 10 ish month old and a 2 year old (14 months between).

went something like this

you get the jist, and when I say we were all unwell I mean we were really unwell. Even DH who had told me repeatedly how he would be good at not getting the kids bugs due to being a doctor and his immune system being used to stuff by now. Nope, he got everything too 👍🏻
My BMI dropped to 17 and I contracted scurvy…like an actual pirate. That’s how grim and unwell we were for sooooooooo long! I ended up having to leave my job after making it into like 3 shifts in 10/12 weeks. Almost pulled the kids out of nursery but everyone told me it I did that we’d just go through the exact same when they started school: The only thing that broke the cycle was sumner arriving.

This year we have a 3 & almost 2 year old and so far (touches all the wood in the room) it’s been better. We have had a couple of things we’ve all had but on the whole it’s been ok, definitely been getting a few weeks between.

You’ll be ok once summer properly kicks in. Just hold on!

pepperminticecream · 24/04/2023 05:44

@Thehonestbadger your post just led me down a rabbit hole of researching scurvy!

@cherrybakewell17 Yes, your experience is normal and what we + our friends have been going through this year too as it was our children's first year in nursery. I have been told that next year should be better now that we have all be exposed to the common viruses. I really hope so at least!

romdowa · 24/04/2023 05:52

It's been particularly bad this winter. My ds doesn't even go to nursery only playgroups and we've had everything and anything. I've an immune system disorder but my husband doesn't and he's caught everything as well

Thehonestbadger · 24/04/2023 06:09

@pepperminticecream
😂 it’s apparently what you get if you live on white toast and chocolate biscuits for 5/6 months straight 😬
