AIBU not to be able to find out the volume of today's alarm?

Am I being stupid? I cannot seem to find this info anywhere (I am extremely tired this morning so no patronising replies please if someone finds it straight away Wink)

I would like to know the decibel level of the alarm as we are wondering if my DCs who are deaf (profound/severe) would hear it. I'm also slightly worried that my DC who has their phone connected to their aids 99% of the time by Bluetooth will be, well "deafened" by the noise isn't the right word is it? BlushGrin

I know phones will vibrate but obviously that's no use unless they are in their hand which they are 99% of the time once again

Would not even have occurred to me that it would cause an issue, I suspect it is 'reasonably loud' as in the way of most warning signals, but have no idea if it's been published.

I’ve been trying to find this out too, as DS who has ASD is extremely sensitive to sudden noises and alarms. A different situation to you though, I appreciate, as we can leave ours in a downstairs room with DH to turn off the alarms quickly and DS and I can stay upstairs.

The same as your phone ringer, as said on radio earlier today.

TrueScrumptious · 23/04/2023 14:15

Or a general phone ring. I should say.

Hesma · 23/04/2023 14:16

If you have an iPhone you can turn it off by going to settings>notification and the scrolling down to the bottom for sever and extreme alerts and turn off

I believe having aeroplane mode stops it too

MartinFowler · 23/04/2023 14:20

Just turn the phones off if you don't want to hear it. No need to hide in rooms or anything. The volume is like a general ring. They can't make your phone suddenly abnormally loud.

As someone who lives in a house where we're suddenly interrupted by emergency response alerts most days I'm thinking that shortly after 3pm most people will realise they've massively overreacted.

I saw someone who said they were petrified because they'll be driving at the time Confused

It is your maximum phone volume, that info is widely available

mrsblueskyeye · 23/04/2023 14:22

I have turned mine off as I have Bluetooth hearing aids and it would probably destroy what hearing I do have!

slashlover · 23/04/2023 14:27

According to the RNID https://rnid.org.uk/2023/04/uk-emergency-alerts-test-how-loud-will-it-be/ the government said

“The volume of the alert will be the maximum allowed by the phone. If the phone is set to silent, it will be maximum volume possible on the individual’s phone.”

The volume of the alert may be uncomfortable for people using hearing aids that connect to a phone via Bluetooth, people wearing headphones, and people with tinnitus, people with hyperacusis, or who are sensitive to sound.

If you are concerned you could:

  1. Avoid wearing headphones during the test
  2. Disconnect your hearing aids from Bluetooth before the emergency alert test
  3. Avoid being too close to your device when the emergency alert test takes place
  4. Avoid crowded spaces where the noise may be amplified by multiple devices.

UK Emergency Alerts test – how loud will it be?

On Sunday 23 April at 3.00pm, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service. Here's what we advise.

I’m going to make sure my phone is in a different room to the dog as she can’t stand loud noises.

AlarmDecibels · 23/04/2023 15:08

That was helpful thank you @slashlover (and everyone else who took time to reply) @mrsblueskyeye do you have a smart watch connected as I think you cld just have that on vibrate if you wanted?
@WellTidy how was your DC? @MartinFowler I detect a slight tone of stop overreacting for FFS and I hope that wasn't aimed at me as my question is a genuine concern, whatever one thinks of the alert system itself.

I can confirm there is no bleeding from the ears of the DC who had their aids connected to phone - I don't know about the other DCs yet. I wonder if it woke them up Grin The cats were definitely unimpressed and seemed to think it was All My Fault.
