This might be long, so please bear with me. A friend recommend I ask on here as I have no idea where else to turn.

I live alone with my two year old and we’re both having medical issues that are sort of related but I can’t figure out the connection.

My son has issues at night. He wakes every 1-2 hours, open mouth breathes, snores, has nosebleeds, is often very dry and gets a lot of dry snot which makes him uncomfortable. He has undergone medical testing. I was originally told his adenoids are enlarged but the last specialist disagreed. His tonsils are fine, he has had a sleep study and only one time where he ‘stopped’ breathing, so they’ve said no further investigation. I’m at a lack of what to do here.

I am incredibly dry. My body, hair, nose, mouth and eyes are dry. I have nose bleeds too. I’m very dehydrated despite drinking loads and loads of water. I even take rehydration salts to counterbalance that. I take multivitamins and have a good balanced diet. I’m exhausted all the time and My mental health is suffering very badly, probably due to lack of sleep with my son but could be hormonal, this coupled with the fact I haven’t had a period since before my son was born made my doctor suggest it’s hormonal. I’ve had lots of blood tests but nothing has shown up. They haven’t tested my oestrogen as they said it fluctuates too much to test. I’ve tried to do lots of natural things to balance my hormones but no changes yet. Nothing more being done at current, not sure what else to do here either.

Our house isn’t particularly dry; I bought a humidifier and it often says the house is in the 60-70% range for humidity. We have this contraption in the ceiling that sucks out all the damp, so I don’t think we have a damp issue or a dry issue, humidity seems to be just right. I don’t have the heating on at night and rarely during the day. I open windows in the house regularly and don’t have washing drying inside. Haven’t noticed mould anywhere.

We both often have eye issues, where they get gunky. Mine are red a lot and very scratchy at night. I’ve seen a. Dentist who said he couldn’t see what the issue is and my sons oral health is great and an optometrist who said the same.

I don’t think it’s the house as we lived abroad for 8 months and the issues continued. We’ve stayed at relatives and the issues continue. So is this just purely coincidental problems we’re both suffering similar symptoms with two very different causes? Or is there something I haven’t considered? We have a dog, could we both be suddenly allergic? I’m asking here because I seem to have exhausted all the medical support and I have no idea what else to do. It’s not nice to be living like this but I’m totally stuck?

Thank you.

I have been like this since having COVID about 6 months ago. Don't know if there's a connection but it's the only thing I could link it to. Saline nasal spray has helped with the nosebleeds and reduced the gunky dry nose symptoms.

That’s interesting. We had Covid when he was a baby and whilst I didn’t test him he had the same symptoms so I assumed he was positive. Hadn’t considered this at all.

It does sound like an allergy. Have you checked behind and under furniture for mould etc? If it's especially at night, mattress and bedding might be issue. What you describing is when aome of my allergy goes mental.
It may still keep on even if relative's house if you are staying just short term.

Yes can see no mold anywhere. We also lived in a hot country for 8 months and the issues continued…I’ll do a deeper check of the house. I do feel like something is going on but I can’t seem to find the source. I’ve checked the attic, I air mattresses and clean etc. I just don’t get what’s going on

Have they looked into Sjorgens?

whatfreshheck · 23/04/2023 12:34

Have you been tested for diabetes?

Seeline · 23/04/2023 12:39

It could be an allergy or intolerance.
You can become allergic to things over time, so it could be the dig.
Allergies etc are often genetic.
Could be something you're eating causing a problem. Did they test for coeliac/gluten intolerance?

polkadotpixie · 23/04/2023 12:45

Sjögren's syndrome?

They’ve done a whole range of blood tests, I’m guessing this was part of it?

I’m not sure, I’m guessing not. Wouldn’t we have other issues if it was dietary, such as bloating/issues when going to the toilet?

Sjögren's syndrome?

I haven’t heard of this, going to have a look

Actually that Sjögren's syndrome is interesting as I get a rash after the first few days of sunshine of the year, photo-something. But it wouldn’t explain my son….nor would diabetes, which is why I feel like it’s allergies or environmental

I went to the opticians in early 2022 as I was having really bad headaches, and she told me I had very dry eyes and have to use drops (admittedly I haven't been back since, it's on my to do list so not sure if it's still an issue, there was nothing that made them feel dry to me so no idea if they are still or not).. I mentioned that I had covid a couple of months previously and she said a lot of people were coming in the same after having covid. I've also been suffering with a really dry scalp and have switched to head and shoulders recently, I had never suffered from dandruff in my life until the last year! I also find I'm putting moisturiser on my face a few times a day as my skin starts to feel tight. I wouldn't rule out anything else, but it could possibly be some form of long covid symptoms?
