Something needs to be done about unleashed pitbulls/ XL bullys

We've just moved to a new area which seemed nice and a good place to raise the kids.

After living here for just a week I've had two encounters with one of those big, bulky pitbull / XL bully type dogs off lead with the type of owner you'd expect to have them - young, unable to control them, the sort who use the dog as a penis extention to intimidate people and train the dogs to latch onto things at the park.

DP got chatting to a man at the shop and apparently they belong to drug dealers from the other block down the road. Lovely.

I'm scared of those dogs and won't pretend I'm not. I know what they can, and do, do to people / kids. My DD is equally as scared of them after having one growl and bark at her at the park.

Surely something should be done about people like this, fines for having them off lead on public streets? I don't know. All I know is they're frightening and shit to live amongst 😔

AIB unreasonable?

YANBU. They all need putting down.

🙄

My friend's NDN got a dog of this type, although without the cropped ears, approx 3 months ago. Friend was really anxious about it initially, she has a little Westie x Schnauzer and the fence between their gardens is only waist-high. And friend herself is tiny!

The dog has turned out to be really rather sweet, if huge, and has shown no sign of aggression so far. The owner, however, is an absolute moron, leaves it shut indoors all day while he's out at work all day (not a drug dealer), doesn't walk it, and then shouts and rants at it when he gets home from work and finds shit and piss all over the floor.

There have been too many attacks by dogs like this now, and I think they need to be added to the banned list, or at least leashed and muzzled when in public.

I have cared for an XL Bully as part of my job.
We have had balls since before Covid that have literally been played with 100's of times. They were strong, robust balls.
The XL shredded them, pulled them to bits and made confetti of them. She wouldn't let us take them off her and she couldn't be distracted with food.
The jaw strength of these dogs is something else. It really isn't difficult to see how they kill.
One lady died when the dog clamped down on her leg, so not mauled as such, and punctured her femoral artery.

I would definitely give them a wide berth, however lovely the owner claims they are.

Grapewrath · 23/04/2023 10:23

All dogs should be on leads in public places imo
XL bullies, if well bred and owned responsibly are good, people friendly dogs. It’s not the breeds fault that some owners are wankers.

HuggingtheHRT · 23/04/2023 10:24

I do agree XL bull breeds are dangerous and more needs to be done to ban/control them. They are not suitable as pets.

Oysterbabe · 23/04/2023 10:25

Dog breeds have been selected for their specific characteristics for centuries. My parents had a rescue border collie and he was crawling on his tummy and trying to herd the chickens on day 1, I doubt he'd ever seen one before then. Suddenly when another XL bully slaughters a child the dog lovers are all Oh it's nothing to do with the breed. I was reading a horrible story the other day when the friendly, family pet, pitbull they'd had for 7 years suddenly flipped and killed both the children.

Some breeds are not suitable pets and should be banned.

But you get wankers with all breeds. But only some breeds looked after by wankers are capable of killing people. Hence it is the breeds.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 23/04/2023 10:01

Well OP if its any consolation.
The breed is already going out of fashion.
High cost of living means many are ending up in rescues.
Breeders are struggling to sell the pups.

I can guarantee in 5 years it will be another breed of dog demonised, we've already done the same doberman, rottweiler, german shepherd, Staffordshire bull terrier, dalmatian, and huskies.

Any bets on what's next.

Trouble is that drug dealers aren't feeling the CoL pinch quite as much as the rest of us.

TheyAreMyBhunasPete · 23/04/2023 10:27

"Its the owners fault, let's not blame the breed!!!!" Bore off. Guess we should legalise guns then right? As its the gun owner and not the actual gun?

Agree entirely. Its exactly the argument the NRA make and it's bullshit too.

Suzi888 · 23/04/2023 10:30

How do you think they got here? Do you think they need themselves. @TheyAreMyBhunasPete

They mutilate the ears to makes them look intimidating and because the ears bleed so much when used for dog fighting. @TheyareEverywhere

ElmTree22 · 23/04/2023 10:30

PassTheDuckie · 23/04/2023 10:20

We could easily ban all
dogs capable of doing serious damage. Why on earth, in a civilised society, do we not?

So you're suggesting kill all breeds large enough to kill?

DdraigGoch · 23/04/2023 10:31

MissMarplesbag · 23/04/2023 10:15

I agree with this approach suggested by @Suzi888 the government needs to go after the owners with hefty custodial sentences.

I'm still erring towards putting the owners down to be honest

KnickerlessParsons · 23/04/2023 10:31

Bloopsie · 23/04/2023 09:20

I agree beside the dangers they are annoying,i go to feed ducks with my small children and autistic child whos afraid of dogs, regularly a dog runs up eats all the bread scares the ducks away and my autistic child wants to run away and the dog starts chasing her. Last time i asked owner to get the dog please he said he cant toucher her u til
she is finished eating :o|

It's beside the point, but please don't feed bread to ducks. It's really not good for them. Try frozen peas.

Restforabit · 23/04/2023 10:32

No doubt. Its not about "blaming the breed". It's irrelevant. The point is, they can be very dangerous when in the wrong hands. (Or even in the right hands, clearly) and the government has a responsibility to balance safety with freedom to own a pet. Hence why pits were banned, and why these should be too.

HistoryFanatic · 23/04/2023 10:33

I hate people who have such a loose lead for their dogs that they can reach and sniff my one year old in his pram. Fuck off!

Casilero · 23/04/2023 10:33

Are you not worried about the fact you've just moved to a house next door to drug dealers? Drug dealers plural? I'd probably be more worried about that than the dogs to be honest. Can you move?

Grapewrath · 23/04/2023 10:36

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 23/04/2023 10:26

You certainly do- but so many breeds are dangerous in the wrong hands. GSD, dobermans, bully breeds and torture have all come under fire previously because they are very, very dangerous in the wrong hands. Other breeds such as cane corsos are primarily guard dogs and kept as pets. Collies have distinct herding instincts thst can make them unsuitable as family dogs in a home with children. Huskies the same.
I dint think we should ‘ban’ certain breeds or insist on rules for some and not others however breeding and owning dogs should be more closely regulated

GoneTillNovember · 23/04/2023 10:39

So many dog owners can't get their heads around the fact that dogs can be dangerous and that not all people love their precious mutts as much as they do.

I'd definitely vote for all dogs on leads/muzzles in public unless a specific dog park. Doesn't matter whether it's the local vicar or the local drugs lord, it's the dogs' jaws that are clamping onto toddlers and shaking them/piercing their skin and killing them, sometimes at random with no warning. But hey ho, dogs are family innit. Oh wait.

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 23/04/2023 10:41

@Grapewrath dogs that attack people, fatally or otherwise, should be treated as the responsibility of the owner. The owner should be prosecuted. All dogs should be licensed. I think that XL Bullies should be banned - the number of attacks shows that are too dangerous to be in society. I'd get rid of the lot of them.

Radiodread · 23/04/2023 10:41

Athese dogs should be banned.

There should be better/ stronger penalties for out of control off lead dogs.

But please don't advocate all dogs on leads all the time. Dog parks have their own massive issues, they can encourage poor canine behaviour and irresponsible dog ownership. And most dogs need off lead time in order not to become unhealth, stressed and bored.
