To feel too old?

I’m mid-30s. Became a mum a few years ago and have been neglecting myself ever since. I want to smarten myself up, look a little sexier and classier than I currently do wearing my husbands massively over side clothes and greasy hair shoved up.

The other day I grabbed the only hair tie I could which randomly had a black bow on it and stuck it in my freshly washed hair - I loved how it looked. I’ve been looking at little bits like flowers for my hair etc, but a friend said I’m too old for those things, they’re for young girls at festivals in denim shorts and wellies. I know I should say ‘fuck it’ and do what I want but I also don’t have a lot of confidence any more and don’t want to look immature and daft. I’ve no idea where to start with myself and this was a sort of start of being nice to myself with my looks, but now I have gone back to my husbands jumper and scraped back hair.

How do you give yourself a bit of a style revival when you have no idea where to start and all the fashionable stuff is aimed at younger women? Do us women get to a point where we’re just a bit too old? I didn’t feel like this before having a child, why does society make you feel past it once you’ve got a kid? Or is it just in my head?

You are still so young! Wear what makes you happy and tell your friend to stop being such a boring arse! Life is too short to constrain yourself so much.

You are in your 30's - you aren't old.

Mid thirties is so young! Friend sounds insecure, reassure her jokingly that you won't be wearing Daisy Dukes any time soon and you'll save your wellies for dog walks - but you really like the way your hair accessories look so you'll be sticking with them.

Definitely not too old. I think some women are just like this. I remember my mum being quite judgy about a school mum back in the 90s who was celebrating her 40th birthday and mum said to a friend 'hmm, and still going about with long hair' and I still remember it now. I'm 34 and have told my mum in no uncertain terms that I will not be cutting my hair when I turn 40, for starters I don't have the jawline for it ;)

Honestly, I think I would rather be considered mutton dressed as lamb than lamb dressed as mutton. I see photos of my mum at my age in M&S twinsets and think to myself she looks far older than any of my friends do now.

One practical point though, I find when I've got a headband or similar on I'm much more likely to get ID'd. Lovely that people think I look younger but as I've fallen out of the habit of carrying my driving license around I've been caught out a few times! If I know I don't have my license with me I take off said hair accessories before attempting to buy a bottle of wine...

I’m almost 40 and wear clips in my hair and scarves wrapped round too. All women in my family look a lot younger than age so probably good genes there but I think it’s important to make sure you wearing nice clothes you feel good in and take a little time to do your hair/put some make up on.
