To use disabled parking bays when on crutches?

Glamgwen · 22/04/2023 08:43

Boring parking question. I’m currently on crutches following on operation. I need to park in a multi-storey car park today (no other options) that doesn’t have a lift. I can’t manage stairs or slopes, so can only park on the ground floor but these spaces are all disabled. Would it be acceptable for me to park in one & leave a note in the window explaining the situation & giving my mobile number in case anyone with a blue badge needs the space? I should add that there are loads of disabled spaces & I’ve never known them all to be in use.

So those with an incurable disabling condition that renders them immobile / near-housebound but who for some reason are denied a blue badge can just go and hang then.

What's the alternative? If anyone could park in them, those that need them wouldn't be able to park. They'd have to turn around and go home.

But it's ok to say my dad should have just have stayed home is it?

nobody is saying the system is perfect and people shouldn’t have to fight when they need a blue badge.

but the alternative certainly isn’t turning it into a free for all.

Tarantullah · 22/04/2023 16:59

The system needs an overhaul rather than a free for all, some areas seem to work better than others. If that comes with places needing to increase disabled spaces then they should be mandated to do so, but it's sad that some seem quite happy for others to not be able to go out just because their condition or injury might not be lifelong.

Except noone is saying this, no one here issues blue badges so stop having a go at them.

If you don't have some sort of system everyone will suffer.

I find it impossible to believe that someone with an incurable disease who is immobile or near-housebound is being denied a blue badge. They would categorically qualify for one.

Again, you'd think. But we applied and were turned down twice.

Nobody said that and @Sirzy doesn't make the rules the government does 🙄

I'm not, I'm having a go at those who think my disabled father shouldn't have been able to use accessible parking spaces.

They've literally said that. No blue badge, no accessible parking space, regardless of need.

People are saying that if you park there without a BB then you risk getting a ticket.

dottiedodah · 22/04/2023 17:05

I have a painful knee at present. Hurts to walk even with a stick.however yabu I think.you need to complete a long 12 page form .council need to consider it .by the time you have finished you will be better!?can you get bus there or taxi instead. You will get a hefty fine otherwise!

Yes, and they're also saying if you don't have one then there's no excuse for parking there, regardless of how disabled you are apparently.

So.appeal.,I don't why your dad has been refused a blue bsdge ,but I can tell k you that my mum.who.is completely immobile had no problem getting one ,neither did my son who qualifie,s under the Severe mental impairment component,it's nobodies fault on here that he doesn't have one but if it was my Dad I would continue to appeal.untill.he got one

No they are not saying that. THE RULES SAY THAT. How hard is it to understand that? If you park in an accessible space then you may be fined whether on street or in a private car park unless you have and display a blue badge. They are saying those are the rules. If someone has a need then they have to demonstrate that need, either by showing the entitlement to the enhanced level of PIP / DLA mobility; or by getting a council OH based assessment after providing evidence of their need from their own medical professionals. Those are the rules.

We did appeal - twice. We were told no. Appealing again would be futile since my dad is no longer with us.

BlankTimes · 22/04/2023 17:07

Blue Badge spaces are solely for the use of people who have a Blue Badge. Park in them without one and you rightly stand the risk of being fined.

The Parent+Child spaces are/were there for you to use, they are a courtesy and not enforceable. In my area, the P+C spaces are often closer to the store's entrance than the BB spaces.

Yes because those of the rules of blue badge spaces ,but they didn't make rules did they
anyway do what you want but you risk.getting a fine

Enhanced rate isn't an automatic entitlement, you need to have points in the right place too.

No, they're not, but it demonstrates the short-sightedness of posters insisting that you can't ethically use accessible spaces unless you have a blue badge. My dad needed them, we used them. Sometimes we got a ticket (not often) but unfortunately that was the price we had to pay if he wanted to go anywhere. Sometimes we got them waived.

We are going round in circles with this people are pointing out the rules it's nobodies fault in here your dad for whatever reason wasn't awarded a blue badge ,.

Sirzy · 22/04/2023 17:15

In my dream world any entitlement for mobility at any level of DLA/PIP would come with an automatic blue badge. This would massively reduce the number of people slipping through the net, then with a clear system for people too old to apply for PIP.

i would then massively increase the provision of blue badge spaces because contary to popular belief they aren’t always empty

People are pointing out the rules, yes. They are also saying it's unethical and selfish to use one when you don't have a blue badge.

I am demonstrating that the rules are not fit for purpose and it's very possible to ethically use an accessible space when you don't have a blue badge.

No idea when your dad applied but the rules changed in 2019 which meant more of us could get a blue badge.
