To consider reporting this to someone?

We live on a new build estate that has a rather scenic (drainage) pond. Over the past few weekends, a family has been bringing their pre-teen (maybe 10-12 years) children to the pond and riding around the footpath of it on a medium sized quad bike. It's not a 1000cc sports bike (noise wise) but it's also not silent. They're usually at it for a couple of hours and more family often turn up to watch (?!).

AIBU to think that a footpath in the middle of a residential estate is not an appropriate place to consider a racetrack for your not-so-little kids? AIBU further to consider reporting this to the council if they carry on?

Is it loud enough to bother you?

Bk1000 · 21/04/2023 18:48

Report it to 101 if you see them again. We have massive issues with this where I live, if it’s not teens riding round the estate making it dangerous for kids it’s grown adults destroying a protected SSSI riding bikes all over it every weekend. I can’t understand anyone would buy one if they don’t have anywhere they can ride it legally!

It's loud enough to hear through the double glazing, it's about the equivalent of someone using their lawnmower.

It's actually less about the noise and more about the fact that whilst they're at it, the whole 'track' becomes unusable for those on the estate that would ordinarily walk their dogs/babies around.

Can people walk another way round? Ie is it the only way in/out of the estate or something? Do they let people through if needed?

FannyPhart · 21/04/2023 18:52

Do they live on the estate?

Strugglingtodomybest · 21/04/2023 18:53

As someone whose family owns quads and dirtbikes, I say they are being unreasonable. They need to find a proper track to ride on.

Ostryga · 21/04/2023 18:54

We had this - parents bringing kids behind our house with quads on the field. Was a frigging pain in the bum tbh.

Reported it to the council and they put an end to it. Does take a bit of time though!

Theunamedcat · 21/04/2023 18:56

Contact the police ask them to send someone down? We have local CSO who will happily have a come to Jesus talk with people like this

XenoBitch · 21/04/2023 18:56

Surely it is not legal to ride any sort of quadbike off of the road or private property anyway?

DorritLittle · 21/04/2023 18:57

We have problems with this near us too. It’s antisocial behaviour but hard to stop in an even semi-rural area.

Weallgottachangesometime · 21/04/2023 18:57

If it is a space others regularly use and they prevent safe use of the space for hours on end, then yes I would report it if there is anyone to report it too.

you would hope, having bought the machines, they would know more appropriate places to use them.

It's not an essential path that leads exclusively to property or anything, but it is the only way to walk around that area of the estate.

I think they've recently moved onto the estate

Yeah I think I would. It’s stopping others using the communal space safely.

The thing is too big to get into a car, so while I obviously agree with you, I have no idea how they would intend to get it to an appropriate place as they'd have no chance riding it anywhere!

That's irrelevant?

This would piss me off. We pay a yearly management charge for the little park on our estate. We have had letters before about not doing X and Y on it (BBQs scorching the grass for example). Is there a management company?

So they presumably live quite nearby? Do they live in the estate?

It would annoy me!

We do too, in fact we've just been charged our yearly maintenance fee for the upkeep of predominantly that area, so yes. Is it worth letting them know do you think?

Ring the police - we have problems with this next to our estate. The well used football pitch is now a mess and a no go for the kids. The footpaths around it (a school route) are a mess and dangerous - high speed quad bikes whizzing round the corner. Not particularly noisy though.

Bearpawk · 21/04/2023 19:11

Yes ring the police.
I'd also start walking a pram (empty) around the footpath and refuse to move out of the way to they have to keep stopping, because I'm petty like that

CindersAgain · 21/04/2023 19:11

Phone 101 as soon as they arrive.

Well perhaps they should have thought of that before buying it. And of course the fact you can't actually use them in public roads or pavements. It always amazes me how many people buy these e scooters for their kids too which everyone knows need a license, insurance and can't be ridden on public roads or pavements. Bit pointless buying one really if you can't actually use it.

ASimpleLampoon · 21/04/2023 19:17

Some police forces have dedicated teams to deal with this kind of behaviour. Where I live you can report it via a website.

You buy a trailer and tow it somewhere suitable. I’d report everywhere and see who fixes it first. Police, council, management agents, parish council, is there a community Facebook page?
