DH is a lorry driver and delivers diesel. We have a constant issue with his clothes smelling a bit of diesel but I think we must have got used to it as now I don't notice it much but others do if they come in the house. However today he has had a spill of it at all over his work clothes. He came home and put them straight in the washing machine and then jumped straight in the shower but it still stinks!! We put two washing tablets in the machine along with fabric softener and did it on a hot wash but it smells just as bad as when it went in! Plus my washing machine now stinks.

I've told him to put them outside to dry as we've got young DC in the house so I obviously don't want them smelling the fumes but does anybody have any tricks of getting the smell out of the clothes or my washing machine?

A quick google....

Here's how to get diesel smell out of clothes: Wash with baking soda and vinegar, grease-cutting detergent, Listerine, or ammonia. To get rid of diesel smell on your hands, you can use mechanics hand cleaner, white vinegar, toothpaste, lemon juice, or salt and soap.

Hope that helps.

Put the clothes on the line and leave them there it can take weeks. Then use the bicarb and vinegar to help get rid of the smell from the washing machine….leave the solution over night and then run a cycle, repeat…lots. Again it takes time and don’t even bother trying to wash anything else in there in the mean time. If I were you, I’d make hubby take clothes off and bag them with bicarb each time he comes home or get another washing machine for only his clothes. If it happens again, rinse as much fuel out as you can and then bag it before even considering washing. :-)

@Azulocean thank you that's really helpful! Will give all of that a try tomorrow

I spilled some all down my legs once. Tried all of those things mentioned, tried hot washes, cold washes, washing with washing up liquid, soaking for 24 hours first with washing powder in the water, adding strong essential oils, over about ten washes. Both trainers and joggers still stank and I haven't been able to wear them since - they're in the garage in case time fades the smell somehow!
