To not understand this about booze?

Disclaimer I am not an alcoholic (I realise some mumsnetters think anything more than sniffing a glass of brandy at xmas makes one a problem drinker)!

Okay last weekend I drank too much. I went out with a friend, we shared two bottles of prosecco (so one each, give or take I don't know if one of us had a bit more than the other one).

She came back to my house as It's on her way home, she came in for a nightcap and we had two decent sized glasses of wine each.

The next day I was fresh as a daisy, no issues whatsoever, no headache or hangover at all.

Rewinding back to the time before that when I drank, a few weeks prior at a family gathering, I had two glasses of gin and lemonade. In all honesty cannot remember if they were doubles or not, they may have been but obviously much less than last weekend.

The next day I was DYING. Dysfunctional,, headache, wanted to stay in bed, felt like crying, uncoordinated....

I hate the unpredictability!

I don't drink all that often, and definitely not if I have an important day or have to be up early or whatever as a precaution so it doesn't really matter, but I don't understand how sometimes it can affect me so much more than others.

Does anyone else notice this? Any patterns?

Depends how much I’ve eaten in the previous couple of days, whether I’ve been exercising, point in my menstrual cycle, number of hours the alcohol was drunk over, type of alcohol. Lots of variables. I think that’s pretty normal for most people.

It really will depend on how hydrated you are, what you ate, also the quality of the alcohol (lots of sugary junk or cheap wine will make you feel worse), how many hours of sleep you got, what time you woke up.

Loads of variables, including my mood to begin with.

NeatCompactSleeper · 20/04/2023 11:42

Two different drinks and it depends on how much you've eaten, what you've eaten and when.

If I eat pasta before I go out, I'm pissed as a fart on two smallish wines.

The first time you were probably still intoxicated when you woke up but before the alcohol had completely left your system you were eating and rehydrating enough to prevent the hangover symptoms. Thats my theory anyway. Seen it happen to a few others.

Thanks all! It's just one of those things that had really confused me and got me thinking. The mood is a very good point!

Yes. Red wine. Dark beer, bitter and stout. Both of them give me worse hangovers than lager and g&T.

I also find that draught lager/beer gives me a worse hangover than bottled.

Fortunately as I have got older I have discovered the advanced tactic of drinking less, which is probably the best way to reduce the effects of a hangover.

I think the clearer the drink, the less worse the hangover. This is not that scientific, but seems to work for me.

I get terrible wine headaches ,particularly red with e ,I'm fine with vodka though!😂
