...to consider doing a crash diet before a wedding?

Evening all!

My lovely friend is getting married in slightly over 6 weeks, and she is the least judgemental person ever but I'd like to not look (& feel) completely shite about myself. I really want to lose significant weight on my body & face.

Is this a crazy idea? I have food issues- including a sugar addiction & have had eds before (restricting & overeating which is where I am now), but she is absolutely worth the effort & I'd love to get cracking for the summer anyway with my weight loss.

For context I'm 5 8", am a size 18-20 (thank f for anonymity!) but carry it fairly well. How can I do this safely? And how much could I lose? I'm a veggie.

Also, are there any treatments I could get such as the fat dissolver thing that'd show significant results?

I know I sound thick (I'm not, promise!) but is this an unreasonable idea? Is it enough time? Happy to do basically anything.

TIA.

I don’t think crash dieting is good for anyone but especially not for people with a history of EDs. Please don’t put yourself at risk of further restriction and bingeing by crash dieting! I very much doubt your friend would want that cycle to be triggered by her wedding. Get yourself a gorgeous and flattering outfit that makes you feel great and get your hair and make-up done so you’re feeling at your best.

I think it's great you want to start being healthier and I wish you best of luck.
However, I wouldn't recommend any quick fix fat dissolving injections - I've known people to pay a fortune for them and they've never worked.
I would use the 6 week mark as an initial goal but not the end goal. As you say, you're friend is lovely and loves you just the way you are and probably wouldn't care if you turned up in a plastic bag as long as you're there to share her special day.
Consider upping your walking and exercise if you're able, and make sensible changes to your eating habits, like cutting down on takeaways and night time snacks.
Would you consider joining weightwatchers or slimming world? Belonging to a group and having sometime who can guide you into a healthier way of eating would be so much more beneficial in the long run than trying to lose X amount of weight in 6 weeks, only to put it all back on again after the wedding because its not sustainable long-term

Fat dissolving injections won't work that fast - and might go wrong so I wouldn't risk it!

In 6 weeks there's probably nothing healthy considering your personal circumstances that you could do, a crash diet wouldn't be great and potentially wouldn't work either. In 6 weeks I'd try and get my 10,000 steps a day, make sure I stayed super hydrated (lots of water!) and try some facial massages you can do at home (gua sha style!). Make a few healthy swaps (not trying to teach egg sucking I promise!) and ditch alcohol / pop for the 6 weeks? Those sorts of things make me feel better quite quickly.

Have you considered something like intermittent fasting? I lost weight very quickly while doing that and there are many health benefits. Nothing but water for 16 hours then 8 hours of eating and drinking as you please x

I would recommend the Paul McKenna “Thin” app from AppStore for 7.99.
Also Les Mills on-demand, they have guided exercise plans for all levels that last 4-6 weeks. I did this during lockdown - I didn’t alter my diet but my body changed through the exercises and I dropped two dress sizes in 4-6 weeks.

Start some healthy habits as pp have said, and also start working on your confidence. Treat yourself to some regular beauty treatments, hair, face, nails etc., and visit some boutiques and personal shoppers to get an outfit you feel fab in.
6 weeks of something like yoga or Pilates can really improve your posture and muscle tone, which will make you look slimmer and feel fitter too.
Plan this 6 weeks to start working on accepting your body and making the most of what you already have; you'll look amazing! 🌟✨

Is it possible the ED is now looking for excuse to go into restrictive mode?

I would also add that AIBU especially is not great for person with ED because lots of people give frankly a dangerous advice, obviously sometimes based on their ED.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/04/2023 20:40

she is absolutely worth the effort

It's nothing to do with her. It's the ED devil on your shoulder whispering in your ear. Start listening to the healthy angel on your other shoulder.

Violet19 · 19/04/2023 20:47

I’d definitely suggest steering clear of crash diets or any quick solutions or suggestions of fasting - really bad advice for anyone, especially someone with a history of ED.

Do what you can to help you feel good about yourself. Hair, clothes, anything like that. Perhaps up the exercise, if there’s a type you like, before the wedding to get you into a good headspace and maybe the odd tweak to what you’re eating.

But a good friend would not want you doing anything punishing or detrimental to your health. Don’t let your ED creep back in.

Hope you enjoy the wedding.
