Is this an unreasonable expectation?

My son has been at his current nursery for nearly a year an a half.

When he first joined one of the "selling points" was that they used an online app to provide pictures to parents and updates on his progress.

This was a bit hit and miss in the baby rooms but they did occasionally upload some stuff to it, however since he started in the toddler room (just before Christmas) he's had 2 picture uploaded to the app and absolutely no development info/progress/observation updates. I get given a sheet of paper when I collect him detailing his nap time/nappy changes and food but that's it really.

Is it too high of an expectation to expect a few pictures during the week and a bit of info as to how he's coming along outside of when he had his bum changed in the space of months?

I do feel at the moment like his nursery is a bit meh about keeping parents in the loop and I just feel like I have no real idea how his time is spent / how he gets on there. I've tried speaking to staff to get a picture how he does but I rarely get anything beyond 'he's been great today' or 'he's has a hard day today'. I feel like I'm never really given any meaningful info. I don't expect something every 5 mins but if you're going to show off to incoming parents that you have an app to keep them up to date is it not a bit rubbish to then just barely use it?

I have multiple friends with children in different nurseries who all seem to get very regular info/pictures of their children and know what they are doing.

I would speak to the room leader and ask when the app is updated as you are worried that you are missing stuff. Simple.

Have you asked? I thought we weren't getting any updates for ages and it turned out it was a problem with the app.

My dd is 20 so went to Nursery before apps were a thing so I didn't know much about what she did in her sessions.
At the time, I would have loved to have known more but on reflection, it was a good thing.

I'd rather the staff spend more time playing with children and talking to them than taking photos and uploading them for parents.

YANBU but you have to raise it with them.
