AIBU to complain about this gym instructor re. noise

I got to a gym with lots of different classes. I like attending certain ones, and try to go to those that best fit with my schedule. However, one particular instructor has her classes so loud that my ears physically buzz afterwards for hours and it's almost unbearably loud during. I mentioned it to the reception and the next week it was a bit quieter at the start and she mentioned someone had complained but throughout the class it gradually got louder and louder. I put earplugs in but it's still pretty bad. AIBU to make a more formal complaint?

Just ask the instructor (politely) to turn it down? That’s the quickest and clearest way to let her know it’s too loud.

Feelingss · 19/04/2023 14:54

I tried that, unfortunately she just turns it down then back up again on the next song!

Can you install a decibel meter app on your phone, run it during the class and show the instructor and/or gym manager how it exceeds safe limits?

carriedout · 19/04/2023 14:56

Send an email to the management & stop going to that class.

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 19/04/2023 14:56

Ask her if she's got a hearing problem

I think I'll do that - it's just a shame as two of her classes are the perfect time for my schedule. I also think she's a good instructor I just don't want to go deaf in the process!

I feel you! It's the internal fucking music that stops me going to these things. It's the same at public swimming pools. Why do we have to have incessant noise/music? It really puts me off going there. Yes, I have tried earplugs and they don't really work.
why can we not just have places without music?

Merangutan · 19/04/2023 15:01

If you need earplugs it must be ridiculously loud! Are there no signs of it bothering other people? Perhaps multiple complaints would get a result!

As the mother of a dancer who trained professionally and a musician I'd say YANBU. I think your first step is to find out if the volume exceeds recommended safe levels and then speak to the centre.

I found the same with my gym. Just so loud all the time everywhere. 3 areas with different music playing then classes adding to it, you couldn't hear anything. I'd come out with a headache every time.

I asked about turning it down and was told no so I cancelled my membership. Currently looking for a quieter gym!

Feelingss · 19/04/2023 15:22

It's not just typical gym noise, I don't have any problems with any of the other instructors, it's just this woman. I've emailed and complained so hopefully the issue can be resolved.

Yes. Would be nice to find places without any music at all, seems to be the thing nowadays.
Sorry OP, that wasn't your point.
Good luck with a resolution!

Feelingss · 19/04/2023 15:54

No it's a good point. I used to go to a lovely very quiet gym which wasn't for me (for other reasons) and it definitely should be more available for people it would suit better 😊

Too-loud music at public events/places is an absolute pet hate of mine. It is absolutely not necessary, and people don't realise what massive damage can be done by regular (or even occasional) exposure to very loud music! It's not worth it at all.

MorrisZapp · 19/04/2023 16:17

I'm the opposite. Can't stand gym classes with quiet music. I've asked many times to have it turned up, but obviously the instructor can't cater exactly to everyone. My body refuses to move without a loud, driving beat.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 19/04/2023 16:33

If no-one else minds the music, then I would get more expensive ear protectors and see fi they work.

DrGregHouseFan · 19/04/2023 18:02

This happens at my gym but actually inside of the gym, they do a class in the corner & it literally pulses through the floor. I have had to stop going at that time as it’s horrible.
