why is my leg so sore? cant get a DR appointment

ive had some leg pain on and off for around 10 weeks now. I didnt injure myself and i didnt slip, fall, twist or hurt my leg at all. i didnt sleep in a different/awkward position either. It just started hurting and it hasnt stopped. im 24 so not really age related pain either. Does anyone have any knowledge about what it could be?

i paid for a physio to look at it- they said its not consistant with an injury, and i know i definitly didnt injure it, and they said with my age the doctor would be better than them at investigating it. I saw the doctor when it started who said its probably one of those anomylous pains that just sometimes happen but it should ease off,, but it hasnt. I've been trying to be seen again since then but have been unable to get an appointment.

the pain started in the middle of my leg, around my knee. It doesnt hurt too badly to walk on - it did initially but thats eased off- but it feels extremely painful to lift it and tight to bend and i cant physically bend it fully, its too painful and uncomfortable. Ive started walking with a limp - its not the weight bearing that hurts, its the lifting it when im walking and its making me limp. I've also had a lot of pins and needles and numbness down that leg and into/under my foot itself. I also get a lot of cramping and numbness in my lower leg and foot randomly, its not like ive been sitting on it etc

ive started getting hip pain too in that side but tbh i think thats from limping and walking funny on it

does anyone know wtf could be going on? Its not swollen, red, bruised and i definitely didnt injure it. my leg/knee/foot doesnt look any different to look at. I had a blood test for something unrelated about a week before it started and my inflammation level was totally normal at that test too if that makes a difference.

i know this isnt a replacement for seeing a doctor, im just slightly frazzled and fed up with it and am hoping someone can help in the meantime :(

Pay to see a private physio, I’ll bet you’ve had an injury in the past causing muscle imbalances

ValerieDoonican · 19/04/2023 16:27

I wonder if this might be sciatica? Ie originating in your low baxk egfron prolonged sitting or driving. (This is of course just a guess)

You might be better off seeing a physio than a GP - in some areas you can self-refer

ValerieDoonican · 19/04/2023 16:27

Low Back From - don't know what happened there!!

Thelnebriati · 19/04/2023 16:30

If you have pins and needles and numbness, can you get to a walk in centre?

NotMyDayJob · 19/04/2023 16:32

I had knee pain that was actually linked to sciatica (via another nerve i forget the name of ) a private physio diagnosed this and gave me exercises. I had some pins and needles as well

Misosoup10 · 19/04/2023 16:39

I have this strange pain that comes in goes in my left calf sometimes right . I also get weird tingles and pins and needles that sometime go up to my arm and face . I went to the doctors and he told me I needed insoles in my shoes 😐

LIZS · 19/04/2023 16:44

Can you self refer for physio or go private?

whatdidido2 · 19/04/2023 16:45

i paid privately to see a physio and he was the one who said the doctor should be investigating it as from his POV his findings werent consistent with any sort of injury or damage. he said it was unlikely to be sciatica (i asked as i know someone with it) as im not having any back pain and its not triggered by the things sciatica is triggered by, the pain and pins and needles start completely randomly. right now i cant feel anything below my knee and i was just standing outside talking to my friend so not sitting on it x

I had this but in my hip. Turns out it's torn cartilage, probably from a long time ago, slowly deteriorating. I needed an MRI to figure it out.

LunaMay · 19/04/2023 16:54

Are you able to tell if the pain is in the front or back of your leg? Are you diabetic?

I'm having similar issues with my feet and then shoulder and hand tingling, i seem to be falling apart all over but it could all be linked.
I have a scan tomorrow to check my back and for possible carpal tunnel etc. I suddenly started to get pins and needle/slight burning sensation down the front of my shins, i thought a rash might be coming but have no marks or anything either. While im at the hospital for my scan tomorrow ill be asking if i should hang around and get that seen rather then wait until next week when ill book with my doc about scan results.

No real help to offer but i feel you!

ValerieDoonican · 21/04/2023 10:33

Apologies, you did say you'd seen a physio. I think you need to go back to the doctor and persist till they give you an appointment.

mumlikeaboss · 21/04/2023 10:36

Have you seen an osteopath? A good one will be able to tell you if you've got something out of alignment, or a muscle or ligament problem or whatever. I'd start there if GP can't / won't help.

KnittedCardi · 21/04/2023 10:45

You need an MRI to rule out torn cartilage. I had torn mine as a child, and spent years being fobbed off as "growing pains". By the time they properly investigated I had to have a complete removal at age 12. I now have really bad arthritis in that knee.

What I actually had was "discoid" cartilage which is congenital. Both my DD's have the same and get recurrent bad pain. However, they so far, haven't damaged theirs, so all good. They manage by strength training the supporting muscles.

KnittedCardi · 21/04/2023 10:48

P.S. GP's re rubbish with this sort of injury. You need to see a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knees. You may well need to pay!

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/04/2023 10:50

I'd go back to the doctor or they won't help speak to 111. You know yourself this isn't right and you shouldn't be being fobbed off. It needs investigating and could potentially be serious.

Careerdilemma · 21/04/2023 10:55

I don't want to freak you out but it could be neurological. MS can present like that. If it is there are excellent treatments available these days.

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/04/2023 18:50

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Or a DVT.

Dymaxion · 21/04/2023 19:23

Whats your lifestyle like ? Do you spend a lot of time sitting/driving ?

Are you taking any painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen and do they help with the pain/discomfort ?

whatdidido2 · 21/04/2023 23:20

It’s definitely not an injury. I haven’t injured or hurt myself at all.

my lifestyle hasn’t changed and it’s generally good, I don’t sit down for long periods of time (I work in retail) and I don’t lie cross legged or stand on one leg weirdly or anything.

I’ve got it right now and it started completely out of the blue about 10 minutes ago. It’s down my thigh ( it feels like it’s inside but the backside of inside, not the side facing the front) into my calf and into my foot and heel. It feels particularly worse under my heel and under my foot. It’s not painful it’s just an intense achey numbness and pins and needles too. It’s horrible but I’m hoping it passes soon. It’s like an achey tingling

What's stopping you from ringing 111 or going to a walk in centre?

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2023 23:25

My mum had this years ago
it was a Baker cyst

you need to see a doc again
she had it drained, all was fine, pain went. But it's better to have it drained rather than it bursting.

that's just one possibility, I think you need another doc appointment. It might be something that just resolves alone but it sounds like something is awry. I hope you get it sorted soon.

there aren’t any walk in centres at all here🤷‍♀️

and I asked the pharmacy if nhs 24 would be an option and they said it would be better to wait for my own GP because it’s not a sudden problem (well it’s only started recently, but it’s not suddenly overnight) and nhs 24 will expect me to go to my gp but getting an appointment there is next to impossible and we are not allowed to change GPS under our health board rules (no idea why, it started during Covid and now it’s policy)

Could be something pressing on a nerve. I have been referred for inner knee/hip pain to the physio. He said probably cartilage damage in both, but I didn’t really fit the pattern- he gave me exercises.

just found out via ultrasound i have a large fibroid. I also have all of the obvious symptoms of fibroids . Surprisingly, leg pain is also a major symptom (it’s on the same side as my fibroid ) so I’m not sure until my fibroids treated, but I’m leaning towards this being the cause for me. However, also have low iron due to the fibroid so could even be that?
HTH I to rule in/out gynaecological issues.
