To remind you to switch off your second / secret mobile before Sunday

WeeOrcadian · 19/04/2023 13:04

There will be people out there, who for whatever reason, own a secondary or secret mobile. This could be for safety, DV, upcoming plans to leave, or any other reason.

Please make sure it's switched off this weekend, in advance of the national emergency alert.
I read that your phone will vibrate for up to 10 seconds, even if it is on silent, so turn it off.
"The message will be received on 4G and 5G mobile phones along with sound and vibration for up to 10 seconds, even if devices are on silent."

Just that

Take care, stay safe

The alert can be turned off in settings

LibrariansGiveUsPower · 19/04/2023 13:08

Bump for those that need it

Coffeeandbourbons · 19/04/2023 13:38

I keep seeing this everywhere, but how many people actually have secret phones for reasons other than affairs or as ‘burner’ phones? I’m not trying to be argumentative just saying?

People who are in DV relationships and are making plans to leave but suffering horrendous abuse at the same time, and if it was alerted that they have another phone what do you think would happen then?

littleducks · 19/04/2023 13:51

I believe the official advice is to turn it off in settings not to turn off the phone. This alert is prewarmed but if you only turn phone off on Sunday then if the alert is used in future for it's actual purpose then there would be no warning and it could be discovered then. Possibly at a time when the ongoing emergency circumstances could make it even more difficult for anyone to help.

Sorry if this has already been asked or if this is a silly question...but how have the government actually got all of our mobile numbers? Mine's just a simple pay as you go, no frills basic mobile, am curious if I will receive an alert?

lipstickwoman · 19/04/2023 14:13

I imagine the gov will ask the network providers to send it...

'The alerts will be broadcast from mobile-phone masts to every compatible phone and tablet within range - the government or emergency services do not need to know the mobile-phone number or any other personal data.'

They don't. It's broadcast from masts, if you have 4g/5g signal and a compatible device you'll get the alert.

ComeOnThenFanny · 19/04/2023 14:14

@Summerhouse2013 I would imagine it's that they have all THE numbers - rather than knowing which belongs to whom.

Ooh very interested to see how many illicit phones we capture at work!

AdaColeman · 19/04/2023 14:20

The emergency alarm must be turned off in Settings, it isn't enough to simply turn the phone off.

Dotjones · 19/04/2023 14:27

According to the BBC

*The alerts will work on all 4G and 5G phone networks in the UK and on devices with the following software:

  • iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later
  • phones and tablets running Android 11 or later*

Which to me means the latter devices will get it even if you're not on a 4G or 5G network.

Bumping for visibility. Makes me really anxious knowing that even with all of us sharing this info, there will be people out there who won't see it in time and will get a secret phone discovered.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/04/2023 15:02

Surely anyone with a secret second phone would keep it switched off when not in use to save the battery and to avoid any unexpected alerts such as spam calls or wrong numbers?

I mean, yeah, many probably do. Some might also leave it on for other reasons, such as location services, awaiting a message or call back, or for speed of access if they need to use it. Knowledge is power, though, and people can't take protective precautions if they don't know there's about to be an alert.

People planning their escape.
People living through DV as a backup in case it all goes to shit.

Maybe, yes. Maybe, no.

Maybe they keep it turned on because their other half goes on all night benders and turns into a violent bastard, so they need it on, just in case

My post was not to ask who? Why? Where?

Just take care - I don't own a second phone but this literally hadn't occurred to me - if this posts helps only one person, that's fine by me

Er, yes it is. If your phone is turned completely off the alert doesn't have the power to turn it on.

I think the message is out there, ive seen loads of threads on here facebook posts, newspapwe articles on how tor disable the alert etc. Anyone who isn't engaged with the world isn't going to see it though however much its publicised

I wonder how many threads there will be from wives who become aware of hidden phones

Not sure if you meant to quote me? I'm in full agreement with your post, the reasons behind it and with the sentiment that it's not about knowing who has a secret phone on or off and why! I hope this info gets spread as far as possible before Sunday.
