Local builders full of themselves?

AIBU to conclude that that the attitude of local builders will bite them in the backside in the near future? They seem so full of themselves thinking homeowners need them more than they need our money?

I get that there is still demand out there but those I’ve been dealing with in a tender process for some work, are sloppy in the details they provide on coatings, get impatient when you ask for clarity and just when you think things are clear, they find ways to increase the costs by claiming x and y are not included.

It might be good times now for them but it won’t last forever as the economy slows.

I’m fed up with just how difficult it is to find a builder you can trust and who does not think that you need them more than they need you and that they could replace your job with the hundreds of other clients that are waiting in the queue.

Unfortunately there is a massive shortage of tradesmen so yes they can act this way at the moment and for a long time in the future . Youngsters aren’t wanting to do apprenticeships anymore. The problem will get worse. Trades don’t want to turn up to quote for a few doors to be hung it’s not worth their time. My partners a carpenter and they are in demand on site which pays a lot more than domestic without the hassle of dealing with customers so the problem will definitely get worse for homeowners wanting work done. The government needs to incentivise young school leavers in to trades.

Curious… why does the government need to incentivize people into the trades? Why not parents and schools?

not the point of the thread really, but that part of your answer really stuck out

Yes. They chuck lots of litter out of their vans as well. There are several rat runs in my area where tradespeople dump their rubbish. They're often very arrogant. My area is quite bad for it.

Maybe if more people refuse to chase after and work with builders who provide poor customer service or have poor behaviours generally, then there might be a change.

The Hugh demand is causing them that feel they can do as they please.

Some trades have now been added to the government's skills shortage occupation list, to make it easier for them to get visas to work here. I think it was only last month that they added bricklayers, roofers, carpenters and plasterers so hopefully things will improve.
