To ask for advice on running headphones so I don't give up before I've started?!

Trying to get back into running as I'm getting fat and lazy, so I need some new Bluetooth earphones. I need some that have great sound / good base, that are comfortable and easy to use. Ideally not too expensive either.
Any suggestions?
(Am shamelessly posting in AIBU for traffic!)

Marathon ones. You can still hear stuff around you (they hook over ears rather than ear pods, which fall out) - which is quite useful. I'll see if I can find a link.

BergamotandLime · 18/04/2023 22:24

Get a Bluetooth headband - supremely comfortable and great for if you want to listen to stuff at night too.

helpfulperson · 18/04/2023 22:26

I bought a cheap £10 pair of bluetooth in ear ones off amazon and wear one of them meaning i can hear my music and what is happening around me as well. And if I loose them I can just buy another pair.

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 18/04/2023 22:29

I run (often around busy central London) and love my Aftershokz. I can hear my music and podcasts and everything happening around me too.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 18/04/2023 22:29

I have a pair of Jaybird earphones which are Bluetooth, two earpieces wired together with a neck look iykwim?

The sound is impressive and I usually only run or cycle with one earpiece in, otherwise I'd not hear anything else...
The other I tuck in my bra strap.

I also have a pair of Aftershokz bone conducting ones. They're pretty good, I like the principle of them (and some race organisers only let you listen to bone conducting headphones in their races) but I hear a tinny sound when they're on and away from me so I don't think they're that good.

Recently I bought a cheap pair of earbuds just for work, not for running, and they're really excellent sound, they're by JLab. I don't think they'd be good for running as there is no mould to keep them in your ear, you know?

My most used for runs are the Jaybird (mode is Xtreme, I think?)

ScoopyDoo · 18/04/2023 22:33

I love my Aftershokz. Can’t bear anything in my ears, and can also hear what’s going on around me as I run. They are pricey but mine are four years old and still going strong.

annlee3817 · 18/04/2023 22:33

I've just bought the Anker soundcore earbuds from Amazon, sound is great and they're comfortable to run in. My aftershokz are ok for running events where only come conducting headphones are allowed, but like someone else said, I can still hear the tinny sound.

Iknowthis1 · 18/04/2023 22:35

I love my Aftershokz

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 18/04/2023 22:36

Headband for me. Cheap, can still hear everything that’s going on around you. Machine washable.

Cannot cope with anything in my ears, they always fall out.

Bullshot · 18/04/2023 22:40

Aftershokz for me .

i need to still hear what’s around me - traffic, people etc I don’t do well with in ear buds,

mine are still working perfectly after five years or so.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/04/2023 04:46

Aftershokz

Merrow · 19/04/2023 04:51

Another aftershokz user.

ItWillBeDone · 19/04/2023 05:01

Aftershokz here too. Amazing battery life. You can still hear things around you. They're not in your ears so no risk of infection (I can't use earbuds as am prone to infection and wax problems).

Im99912 · 19/04/2023 05:28

Aftershockz bone conductor headphones

I have had mine for 3 years
still excellent very good charge and easy to use
they are marathon ones so designed for running
neckband type
between 60 - 100
mine were over 130 when I bought them
but they are around 60 now as old

notveryspeedy · 19/04/2023 17:33

For those of you using Aftershokz, exactly how good is the sound quality? A lot of the reviews say that the bass is rubbish / that they're tinny. I really don't want tinny!

OP posts:
AHugeTinyMistake · 19/04/2023 17:37

The bass isn't brilliant - and I say this as a massive fan of all kinds of bass music.

It's acceptable at best I think - I have the latest model so it's not that my shokz are old either

I got much better bass from a cheap pair of in ear phones from Amazon. I think they were a tenner 😅

I love these. You barely know you have them in, they are so comfortable, and they don't budge even when sweaty!

Aftershoks sound quality is great unless I'm running next to a busy road. But then in that situation I want to be able to hear the traffic anyway so it doesn't bother me

greenacrylicpaint · 19/04/2023 17:51

in winter I love my bluetooth headband.
but it's too warm (for me) if outside temp is above 14 degrees.

in summer I use cheapo corded bluetooth ones.

base sounds are imo difficult with headphones unless you use over ear ones, but I imagine them to be uncomfortable for running. plus you would lose ambient sound.

Way out of my price range...!
