Is everyone allergic to the inside lane??

Honestly I’m noticing it so much more and it actually infuriates me. Whenever I’m driving on A roads or motorways with 3 lanes, everyone just cruises in the middle lane even though they’re going super slow.
No one uses the inside lanes properly or use the overtaking lanes to actually overtake. Even 2 lane roads, the amount of people I have to undertake because they’re going 10mph below the limit and still in the right lane…

It actually infuriates me. Do they not teach this on tests anymore??

the M25 has to be the worst for this. I dread driving round it.

RampantIvy · 18/04/2023 17:42

It happens all the time on the A1M.
My other moan is when a lorry tries to overtake another lorry and the one on the inside lane tries to race the overtaker, so they are both travelling at the same speed and then block the road if it is a dual carriageway.

They were saying on a smart motorway report this week that people are avoiding the slow lane for fear of hitting a stationary vehicle . Can't say I blame them.

No, it makes sense, I agree. If only they would use lane 2!! But no ... instead all pile into lanes 3+4

Minfilia · 18/04/2023 17:47

I just undertake them. I’m not driving at 50mph on a motorway because some eejit thinks it’s okay to drive at that speed for miles in the middle lane.

worse than that though - I slowed to allow someone to join the motorway from the slip road today… and rather than slip in front of my car (with a more than ample gap), they slammed on their brakes, ground to a halt, and sat there on the slip road with their indicator on 😱 fucking batshit!

hattie43 · 18/04/2023 17:51

I agree . I used a motorway the other day and there were so many middle Lane hoggers . Really annoying .

Lorries in the middle lane completely do my head in. Often to be seen parallel to another lorry.

Eh?

Littlefuz · 18/04/2023 17:57

I passed my test last October and this was one of the top things my instructor drilled into me - ALWAYS stick to the left lane as default, only use the right lane for overtaking or if you have a right turn coming up. It probably depends a lot on the instructor though.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2023 17:58

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 18/04/2023 17:16

Someone told me that they are now teaching that the inside lane is for joining or leaving the main road.
Drives me nuts.

This would help so much with congestion as people who are passing the junction wont be caught by people filtering in.

They aren't racing - they will both be at the top of their speed limiter (90KMH) but will have slightly different limits due to other factors like aerodynamics, tyre wear, load, incline etc. I am sure they would get past each other more quickly if they were able - that is just the effect of them all being limited to 90KMH

lipstickwoman · 18/04/2023 17:58

Lorries side by side. One in the middle, one on the inside. Trundling up a hill usually, turning the motorway in to a one lane road if you want to do more than 50

What do you propose to solve this?

That's what I was taught many moons ago. I also got points on my test for not driving "properly" ie moving back into the left lane in good time.

Laurama91 · 18/04/2023 18:06

Drives me insane. If someone can undertake you your in the wrong lane. I see a lot of "its more dangerous to move change lanes", it is not more dangerous that I have to go from lane 1 to 3 and back to 1?

FurAndFeathers · 18/04/2023 18:09

LucifersLight · 18/04/2023 17:40

It can be a pain driving on the inside lane when so many people are joining though as you’re forever switching lanes which I feel is more dangerous.

It can also get annoying driving at 70 in the outside lane with muppets that think they are on an autobahn coming up behind you constantly.

They should put 10x more speed cameras on motorways to try to stop the eedyits.

Undertaking is idiocy, and anyone going 65 in a 70 zone is not “pootling”.

if this is a constant problem you’re likely the common denominator and need to pull left asap after you’ve overtaken rather than sit in the right hand lane

FurAndFeathers · 18/04/2023 18:12

I passed someone on the right hand lane of the M1 doing around 45 mph with a giant tailback behind them, effectively being a rolling road block. It was interesting that no one wanted to follow me passing to the left in either of the two perfectly clear lanes except lorry drivers

the M74 northbound is also terrible for this and often when all 3 lanes are completely empty except for a numpty pootling along in the middle at 68mph 🙄

I think you are actually part of the problem here.

HecticHedgehog · 18/04/2023 18:19

Learner drivers can't go on motorways so most probably don't have experience (although I don't think that's any excuse)

It infuriates me too and whilst it's probably wrong if someone is toddling along in lane 3 and I'm in lane 1 going faster, I just undertake. Wouldn't risk it if they were in the lane next to me though. Then I pull over two lanes, overtake and pull back in two lanes sigh

HecticHedgehog · 18/04/2023 18:22

The most annoying part is when the inside lane is clear and people are in the middle lane. Whyyyyyyyy???

IglesiasPiggl · 18/04/2023 18:25

People do this on the M25 because the left hand lane turns into the exit lane a lot of time, ie you don't turn off left, if you're in the left hand lane you will be shunted off the motorway at the exit. If it's busy it can be hard to move out of the left lane so people stay in lane 2.

citylifemummy · 18/04/2023 18:27

This. It is terrible in Edinburgh and the Lothian's 🤦🏼‍♀️

LlynTegid · 18/04/2023 18:29

@Neededanewuserhandle Lorries I can accept if one is in the left hand lane.

I think that middle lane hogging should result in a court case and points on a licence. Dashcam evidence from another road user or footage from a passenger's mobile phone be accepted. The normal reticence to report/tell on another person's behaviour would be a lot less than usual.

Apart from on parking charges, there is no 'war on the motorist'. I'd like one on bad drivers.

I do find the m25 is not only full of lorries in the inside lane ( at least at the times I use it) but also the inside lane frequently turns into an exit lane.

Qhaecciarr · 18/04/2023 18:31

God yes, I keep noticing this when I drive on motorways. Whyyy??? Drive in the left-most lane you can unless you're overtaking...so many long queues of middle-lane hoggers blithely failing to overtake anyone while the left-most lane sits empty for miles. It's beyond ridiculous. How do people get to be so oblivious?

BitOutOfPractice · 18/04/2023 18:31

Oh my goodness this has got SO much worse in the last few years. It drives me CRACKERS!

It seems even worse on 4 lane motorways. No one seems to know the hell to do

So you don’t think you should have to change lanes, but you’re happy for everyone else to have to go out two lanes and back in two to get past you hogging the middle lane. Ok. Great.

yea, you are part of the problem.
