To feel stressed about my manager/interview?

I am on annual leave for 2 weeks. I return to work next week. Therefore I am out of office and can’t approach my manager directly. I don’t have their phone number.

Last week, whilst on annual leave, I got a job interview invitation for next week. The interview is scheduled to be the day after I return to work, so I sent an email to my manager last week requesting time off for it. This is to prevent my request being too short notice, as I reckon they may have turned it down if I told him the day before when I return to work.

anyway, it’s been a week and they haven’t replied to my email although they are at work. They haven’t put my name on the leave chart so my request hasn’t been actioned and work is being booked in my calendar. Aibu to feel stressed about this? What would you recommend I do?

I have a feeling they will give me the leave when I see them in person, but I will be forced to do something about the work booked into my calendar. Ie having to try and squeeze them in the day before which will be stressful.

Also to add, the job is for an internal position and the manager is aware I’m applying for jobs.

Can't you ring him in the office? Or email again/send a Teams message?

BarbaraofSeville · 17/04/2023 17:45

But surely if it's an internal position then you don't need time off as the interview is in work time? Presumably you don't have control over when the interview is because there will be day for the interviews for all the candidates and they need to make sure the people on the panel are all available.

The work booked into your calendar needs to be rearranged for afterwards or done by someone else if you can't do it all on the day you return to work.

Good luck with the interview.

I'm surprised you need to use annual leave for an internal interview.

cannaecookrisotto · 17/04/2023 17:53

Can you give him a ring? On the telephone?

Newuswr · 17/04/2023 17:58

I don’t have the manager’s phone number unfortunately, we don’t have an office number either. They’ve only been my manager for a week as my previous manager left recently. Should I just chase the email?

It’s an internal position, but I would need to use flexi leave for it. This still needs to be added to the leave chart or else someone would think I’m skiving.

I’d 100% perform better doing the interview from home regardless. If I tried to do it at work, no one would take my interview seriously ie would expect me to do my meetings scheduled at the same time, walk into the private room and ask me things, or say something to knock my confidence. Hence why I’m applying for a new job 😊

Is your manager booking the work in or other people? Can you put a block in your calendar saying ‘annual leave TBC’ so people stop booking things in?

Newuswr · 17/04/2023 18:31

@zombiecupcakes other people! That’s a good idea but it’s full now. Ugh.

If you can access your calendar out an out of office on and email your manager to chase the holiday

how would you contact them if you were off sick?

Newuswr · 17/04/2023 18:48

Good point @itsnotyourfence , I’d have to call in sick.

I’ll have to get new manager’s number asap. In the meantime I’ll just chase the email, might even send a Teams message as a reminder. I’m hoping it’s that the manager has been busy vs that they can’t give me the leave.
