Passports

DC don't have passports, I'm about to apply for one for them. Not with their dad anymore but understand I need to give his details.

Anyway, AIBU to think that both parents (if both on the scene) should have to sign for a child's passport?! I think it's absolutely absurd that you can get a passport for your child and leave the country and the other parent might not even know!

I get it if there is only one parent on the birth certificate, if you can explain / prove that one parent isn't around etc but if you have two involved parents who aren't together, surely you should both have to ok the passport.

Never really thought about it until now as it's their first passport but surely that's a massive flaw in passports.

What if the other parent is an arse who refuses to sign for a passport just to be spiteful?

hoolwhoopa · 17/04/2023 15:14

I still don't think that's as big of an issue as being able to secretly get a passport and take the kids out of the country.

What if an arse of an ex did it and you never saw the children again?

Maybe there needs to be a way to show proof of a parent withholding agreeing to a passport without any real reasoning

You're still supposed to get permission of those with parental responsibility when taking a child abroad.

The flaw is with the parent, not the passport.

If this is a concern, a parent can lodge an objection (in advance) with the passport office.

You are overly complicating a system that's working. This would take up a lot of court time, which we don't have and cost a lot. There are safeguards in place to prevent kidnap and the ability to get children back. You are forgetting the child's right to hold a passport.
