To wonder where my donated item went?

There is a local charity that does great work. They had a fundraiser planned for today and we’re asking for raffle items. I sent the organiser a photo of a brand new items that was appropriate to their audience that I was willing to donate if they wanted it. It was worth about £200. He said yes, great, they’d appreciate it.
fundraiser event was today. Someone posted a video of a walk through of the raffle items and I didn’t see my item there.
I’ve just watched a replay of the live video of all the tickets being drawn and my donation wasn’t there. I’m not sure if IBU to be a bit peeved.
Im not sure if I should message asking what happened to the item I donated or just take the attitude I was willing to donate it so it shouldn’t matter what happened to it.

I'm disgusted that you said nothing tbh. Cheeky fuckers like your friend, exist BECAUSE nobody says anything!!!

Unfortunately it's all too common. I've met several people who are the same or have family members who are the same ... take all the stuff they want before it hits the shelves.

Ah, sausageroll, you haven't seen the film 'A Christmas Story'? Possibly the best Christmas film of all. A treat awaits you in the form of the Pink Bunny Suit. And the terrifying Bumpus Hounds.

OhMerseyMe · 18/04/2023 17:48

Of course I am interested in what happened to your item, but more interested in the entire backstory about it! Tell us everything!!

swuidge · 18/04/2023 18:03

I think if you donated the item specifically for their raffle then yes ask.
If you didn’t actually make it clear that is what the donation was for, it could have gone to a shop to be sold?
what was the item? Was it something that was what they were looking to raffle, might have just not have been what they wanted for the raffle instead? I think you might be looking too much into where this item went.

Yeah….. except it wasn’t an auction. As I mentioned once or twice.
If someone quite liked it then they could have potentially got it for a quid, or whatever the cost of one ticket was.

For those saying I could have bought the frame for pennies at The Range, that shop doesn’t exist here, as I’ve mentioned before. I’ve also mentioned that frames are quite expensive here. Here being Not The UK.

I think @AllHopeandRainbows might have the answer.

I’ve lost interest now. There were better things to steal, things worth more than 20p, so not worth thieving. I shall continue to support the organisation- which is not a charity shop - because they do amazing work in an area no one else wants to touch.

What do they do (just out of morbid curiosity!) I must admit I think in your shoes I'd have done the same, when I give things to charity it's because I'm hoping they can do some good whilst getting out of my hair at the same time.

@ireallycantthinkofaname
They clean up backcountry areas. People report abandoned homeless camps with shit left everywhere, cars left abandoned and burned out - that sort of thing. This group cleans up the area, removes all the crap and disposes of it. They’re all volunteers and it’s all donation funded.
A few years ago a local doctor was reported missing and the organizer, who had incredible knowledge of the backcountry, went out to search for him.

Did they find the doctor?

Did they find the doctor?

Not by this guy, but he was found a day or two later. He’d committed suicide.

What are homeless camps? Are they the sort of thing shown in Nomadland?

fruitbrewhaha · 19/04/2023 13:56

Gosh it gets more intriguing. I'm guessing Canada. Do they call it back country there?

Yes. And there’s a LOT of it.

Homeless camps are just areas where the homeless set up with tents and tarp shelters. Some actually get old motor homes and caravans out there which they usually set fire to before they move on. They leave broken tents, tarps, litter, stolen stuff they can’t use, and all other kinds of shit behind.
Many camps are in the towns and cities in official areas which are policed and have warming/cooling stations, toilets and washing facilities.

This has reminded me of when I was at primary school, late 60s. Our class teacher banged on for weeks about a poor family with 10 kids who wouldn't get any Christmas presents. She really laid it on thick, tears on Xmas morning etc. Asked us all to bring in any stuff we didn't want, for these poor kids. My family didn't have much, like many others, but my mum sorted out a few bits for me to take, including a pencil case in good condition.

Back at school after Xmas hols, what should be sitting on teachers desk full of her pencils was my ruddy pencil case!!
I never said anything and don't think I told my mum. Bloody CF ripping off a class of 8 year olds!!

My god. That woman needed to be stopped! I just cannot get my head around not saying anything and even going as far as to keep it from your mum - why?!?!

I’d suspect this one is possibly more that the teacher didn’t want to include it in the presents but had forgotten who donated it to return it. A used pencil case even in “good condition” isn’t exactly what a child wants for Christmas, is it? I’ve done toy drives before and we specifically say no second hand / used toys or clothes because when you’re a child in care or from a poor family who never or rarely has anything nice or new, receiving something that’s obviously some better off kid’s unwanted cast off as a Christmas present just reinforces what society thinks you’re worth.

Stoptheworldpls · 20/04/2023 14:15

This is the only logical explanation

T1Dmama · 22/04/2023 13:05

I’d 100% want to know! In fact I’d email and ask for it back stating they didn’t raffle it so can I have it back!

HellieWelly · 22/04/2023 22:41

EasterBreak · 16/04/2023 10:53

It went home with them as it was obviously thought to be too good to raffle. My aunt works for a charity who accept donations and this does happen often. Perk of the job so to speak. It's obviously not right though.

It’s not a perk of the job, it’s theft.

LemonTreeSkies · 26/04/2023 02:13

Not much to update. I didn’t contact them but got tagged in one of their posts. When I went to the post it was a list of all the donors and what they donated.
My name and item wasn’t on the list.

I can’t think of two possible scenarios:
1: They listed my name and item and tagged me then thought “Shit! She wanted to be anonymous” and removed my name and tag.
2: They did the above then thought “Shit! We’re keeping this for ourselves/giving it to Steve” and removed my name and tag.

Number 1 makes more sense to me so that’s what I’m assuming, and I’m happy with that.

I think you are probably right.
