to wear trousers…..

We have a party invite, which says "Dress: Gentlemen smart and elegant,
Ladies, your best cocktail dresses."
I don't do dresses, and am very overweight and self conscious.

Could I wear black trousers and a sparkly top do you think?
thanks

How old fashioned and sexist. I'd def wear a trouser suit.

whatatod0 · 15/04/2023 22:31

it's a 60th party if that helps at all.

Of course!

WimpoleHat · 15/04/2023 22:31

I think it’s just code for “dress up” - in which case, trousers and a sparkly top would be absolutely fine! Have a lovely time.

Daftasyoulike · 15/04/2023 22:32

Yes of course you can. Just chose the smartest and most attractive outfit that you feel comfortable in, and carry yourself with as much confidence as you can muster. I'm short and very overweight, so totally understand your situation, but would far rather dress up in something that I feel comfortable in and go out, than refuse the invitation because I don't do dresses.

Yes, just do the glam version of an outfit you're happy in. Add diamond encrusted cane and spats and you're sorted. 😁

MagiMagic · 15/04/2023 22:32

No one will mind and no one will care.

A 60th party with a dress code?! Delusional. Trousers and a dressy top sounds great 👍🏼

MrsDoylesDoily · 15/04/2023 22:34

Of course you can wear what you want.

But just a thought, if you're self-conscious you'll probably stand out a bit more due to not wearing a dress.

I do wish people would think before they send this sort of silly invitation out, telling people what to wear Hmm

WellPlaced · 15/04/2023 22:34

I would never let anyone else dictate what I wear. Wear whatever you like.

Daftasyoulike · 15/04/2023 22:35

When dressing up, I often go for a flowing jacket/cardigan effect top, over a camisole, as this can look very dressy, AND hide a multitude of sins if you know what I mean OP.

whatchagonnado · 15/04/2023 22:35

I would hope they wouldn't turn you away if you didn't wear a cocktail dress!!! 😳

Actually, think cocktail dress code is pretty odd dress code for a 60th - lots of people have all sorts of reasons why a cocktail dress would not be a good option at that age. As long as you are smart and groomed, I'm sure it would be fine.

purpleme12 · 15/04/2023 22:36

Yes you can.
Like PP said, it really means 'dress up smart'
I bet you anything they don't mean it has to be a dress!

CabbageKale · 15/04/2023 23:03

Where is the party? I'd think about what is appropriate for the venue rather than the rather outdated dress code on the party invitation.

Def wear trousers if you are more comfortable

whatatod0 · 15/04/2023 23:14

Thanks all. I just hope I won't be the only one not in a short dress. The host, and lots of friends are all lovely and slim.

I'm sure you'll look lovely OP! The most gorgeous thing you can wear though is confidence, so get in front of that mirror and practice!😃
