To ask how my ASD son will progress

I know none of you can tell me that but wondering if others can share their experiences etc. My lovely little guy is nearly 4 and is in the process of being assessed for ASD. He's made lots of progress in the past year or two, he was completely non verbal with no communication skills whatsoever and he now has hundreds of labelling words/phrases, he knows his colours, the alphabet, he can count to 20. Most importantly in the past few months he has learnt to use language in a functional way and can now tell me what he wants verbally using single words which really has changed my life. So nice that he can now point at his cup and say water rather than screaming and crying and me having to figure out what he wanted. However he's still massively behind his peers. His understanding and obviously his speech is massively delayed and he isn't interested in interacting with other kids. He lives in his own happy little land where the only important people are me and his sister. He's such a lovely happy little boy though, loves pirates and cars and does imaginative play with them. Loves dinosaurs too! He sleeps well. He's happy. His main struggles are with speech and language and anxiety around certain situations like haircuts. He is also not toilet trained yet. We've recently moved up to Scotland and he's in a new nursery now and they're really great with him and he's taken it all in his stride. He's going to be held back a year before starting P1. Does anyone have experience of a child like my gorgeous boy? I cannot put in to words how much I worry for him. Thank you xx

It's true no one can say for sure. All autistic children are different.
All I can say is that DS2 was very like your son at that age - although he didn't really play imaginitively very much and preferred the old lining things up/Thomas the Tank Engine/certain music on loop. He started at MLD special school with an autism base and excellent mainstream integration programme. Eventually mainstreamed entirely.
Now 32, lives independently, works, goes on holiday, has friends.

@Timesawastin thanks so much for your response! That has given me a lot of hope! Can I ask how your son's understanding of language was? This is my biggest concern at the moment really as my boy doesn't follow instructions

Also my son plays the same music on loop too! At the moment Santiago of the Seas theme tune 🤣 enough to drive you crackers!
