Endless snacking

I find it interesting how some parents feel the need to constantly feed their children. Amongst school parents (primary) there seems to be a high level of anxiety if the children don’t have a snack at playtime. Surely children can survive from breakfast to lunch? It’s ok for them to be hungry for a bit, as lunch approaches, isn’t it? It’s the same with water bottles. Children don’t need to be endlessly sucking on a water bottle do they? Perhaps I’m old fashioned but snacking was not a thing when we were kids. We just ate at mealtimes, which included tea after school and then an evening meal.

Very torn as children need more fuel as they are more active and to be fair if you’re expecting them to concentrate while a little bit hungry it’s asking a bit much. Our breaks used to be at 10. 45 and 12.45 and I think that’s a good idea especially now- I work in retail in a very hectic shop and if my first break isn’t until after half eleven I’m cranky, tired and not at my best work wise!

Btw the people talking about adult snacking or snacking outside of school life is very different now- kids were out more a parents could just let them go out, there was less sitting down and definitely not as many screens, there were less cars and so more walking, people didn’t have the same number of sedentary jobs and were getting more sleep as they didn’t have crazy commutes so they didn’t feel the need to fuel an exhausted body, as well as this there wasn’t the amount of properties with no gardens, and going out walking etc when rurally didn’t mean you took your life in your own hands because of the volume of cars! Plus tv, internet … everything now is geared towards sitting down!

The children in Enid Blyton stories always had snacks or went to cafes to buy cakes and sugary drinks. In boarding school stories written by various authors too the children come with tuck boxes which are topped up by deliveries of cakes and sweets from home. These books were written between the 40s and 60s, and although they are fictional they’ll have been based on common social customs of the time. The type of snacks may have changed but snacking certainly isn’t a new thing.

Well, look at characters in books like Paddington. He always has to carry at least one marmalade sandwich with him everywhere in case of an "emergency".
