This was my daughter’s story too and I know there are many more. Shouldn’t we be doing more to protect young people?

Oh what an incredible advert, that really made me cry

I know me too.

It’s not just eating disorders that it causes but depression, body dysmorphia…

It’s almost impossible to protect children from it.

I've just seen this advert and came on to see if there was a thread on it.
It's brilliant and so needed. It immediately made me think that given the exponential rise in teenage girls being distressed with their gender and 'identifying' as the opposite sex.
Social media is what drives this and is particularly dangerous to girls spread vulnerable due to various factors but including autism, existing mental health issues and having a care experienced background.
How long before we're 'allowed' to view these vulnerable girls in the same light?
Aibu to think that surely we can't wait years until Scotland in particular reviews its teaching of gender ideology in its Rhsp curriculum knowing this?

Awumminnscotland · 24/04/2023 07:18

Ah I sent this too quick and see I've not self corrected the first paragraph but hopefully the gist is gotten with the aibu at the end...

The change in personality after getting a phone was heartbreaking and so true. We held off on social media until dd was 14, the choice being between feeling left out or having her mind shaped by how she ‘should’ be acting, gender bullshit, anorexia, self harm reels which are fed to them constantly.

what teenage girls have to fight against now is unimaginable, at a time where they aren’t fully capable of making the right choices. It’s not much better for boys - but they turn into the predator, not the prey.

That's interesting. The general trend around here seems to be the age for phones is getting younger and younger. It's now normal for p4 kids so 8/9 yr olds to have them.
Personally we're currently planning to hold off as long as possible but to educate about the dangers from now (7).

That is very powerful.

Madeintowerhamlets · 24/04/2023 09:36

I worry so much for my DD when she grows up. Thanks for posting this OP. I’m glad Dove are fighting for legislative change & I will sign the petition. We have to protect them.

Red0 · 24/04/2023 10:37

Is there a petition we can sign for this? I was sent one but it says it’s to be sent to the US Senate. Is there a UK petition does anytime know?

AgnesNaismith · 24/04/2023 12:25

There is this petition from refuge. It is a prt of the online safety bill discussion/debate which was due to start on the 19th. It’s not the exact same but it is to protect women and girls online. https://campaign.refuge.org.uk/page/126245/action/1?locale=en-GB

It is, sadly, a great powerful ad.

Tr33sPl3as3 · 24/04/2023 16:46

Red0

I‘m not sure there is. The lack of any effort to do anything about it is as worrying as what it can lead to particularly when services are so stretched.

Such a terrifying thing to have to consider. And it’s very real sadly.
Thanks for the link.
