To take three month old to A&E

Hiphopopotamonster · 14/04/2023 07:33

So my three month old has what I am fairly certain is Covid (it’s been running through the family for the last week) I was set to manage her symptoms at home with calpol etc but I’m feeling concerned now - her breathing is very noisy, she feels very hot (our thermometer is broken so I can’t check numbers) and I’m really struggling to get her to feed.

my experience with 111 is that I spend all day waiting for a call back just to be directed to a and e. And same with the gp. So am I being unreasonable to take her or am I one of those drains on nhs resources?

It’s important that people realise that ibuprofen is generally better for temperatures than paracetamol. Nosy breathing is not the same as wheezing.

Please stop derailing a thread about someone's poorly baby. Start your own if you think educating people on the use of ibuprofen in 3 month old children who might not even be at the minimum safe weight to use it is so important.

It's important that you stop posting incorrect medical information.

Personally I would phone GP as they will always prioritise children especially babies.

mac1974 · 14/04/2023 10:46

Hope your lo gets well quickly.

2bazookas · 14/04/2023 10:47

Send someone to the local pharmacy to buy a thermometer.

SergeiL · 14/04/2023 10:50

Read the full thread people or at least OPs updates. She called 111 and they called an ambulance.

OP - hope little one is feeling better soon. You did the right thing.

Nurofen obsessive - zip it!

shivawn · 14/04/2023 10:55

The noisy breathing would be enough for me to take her in so I think you did the right thing. Hope all goes well and you get in and out quickly.

You have no idea how much that baby weighs, my youngest weighed 9lb at 3 months. Nurofen can be given from 3m IF the baby is at least 11lb. It can cause bronchospasm. If the hospital give the baby nurofen it will be calculated properly according to weight and under the supervision of medical professionals who know how to intervene if things go wrong. It's a very different scenario to a parent giving their child a dose at home.

Thanks again all. We’ve been seen and admitted for obs for next 24 hours at least so definitely the right call to go in.

weird ibuprofen derail 😂 DD was a month premature and is still little so even though she’s three months she’s a bit too small for it really.

And I know it makes me look like an irresponsible mother having no thermometer but it broke very recently and I just haven’t got around to replacing - didn’t expect to need it so soon!

Many people don’t have thermometers. You can tell if a child has a fever without one. Glad you have been seen quickly but sorry to hear you have been admitted. Better safe than sorry though. Take care.

You mean they haven't given her enough ibuprofen to satisfy a horse? Shoddy medical care - state of the NHS Wink

I'm glad they're taking this seriously and proves you absolutely did the right thing.
I hope she feels better soon.

Good decision to call NHS24. Hope your LO picks up soon.

We’re back home! For anyone interested in an update - her breathing stabilised overnight and the fever broke too so out of the danger zones on both counts so the hospital were happy to discharge today with strict instructions to go back if she dips again.

Cannot fault the medical care and speed of everything at all - it’s been faultless.

We hear a lot of horror stories about ambulance wait times at the moment and it must be awful for those that have been affected. However yesterday, we had less than five minutes from me hanging up the phone to 111 and the ambulance arriving so it is reassuring in the extreme to know that the system does still work at least some of the time! (I know we were very lucky)

JPduck · 15/04/2023 19:08

@Hiphopopotamus
That's great news 😊

Axahooxa · 15/04/2023 20:30

Great news and thanks for the update!

Sending hugs, hope your little girl is on the mend xx

Panda8383 · 15/04/2023 21:40

Sorry I just seen your update, glad everything ok and defo just go with your gut instinct x

Ali2710 · 15/04/2023 22:00

When she is breathing is there sucking in under her ribs? If so, call an ambulance as she may have bronchiolitis. My 4 month old son had noisy breathing and GP said it was bronchiolitis but he was ok and prescribed an inhaler. His breathing got worse and I had to call an ambulance as he had sucking in. He was hospitalised for 3 days. The swab they took came back showing he had a coronavirus (but not covid-19). I am not trying to scare you but just sharing knowledge! Definitely take her to a&e to be checked out. Hope she feels better soon x

Bibbitybobbitty · 15/04/2023 23:04

Struggling to feed is a worry, remember taking DD at similar age to A& E which was heaving- charge nurse was watching waiting area & I could see watching him me try to sooth her & struggling to BF feed, we were taken in quickly to be seen & admitted for 5 days, she had a virus. It's common, always are on side of caution & trust your instincts
