Old v new pregnancy test results - am I pregnant?!

Shamelessly aibu for traffic

tldr - old (18 months but not expired) pregnant tests are positive , new (clear blue and supermarket) tests are negative - am I pregnant?!

i had a baby 9 months ago and periods haven’t returned. Was stupidly complacent and had unprotected sex. About two weeks ago cried hysterically at nothing and then realised I was bone tired and thought uh oh. Have tests still in the cupboard from ttc last dc, checked expiry and they’re still in date. Came back positive. Did two more. Same result.

have been reeling ever since. Few days ago, I did a clear blue to see how many weeks I was. Stunned to get ‘not pregnant’ result. Did it again today - also said not pregnant. Thought ok, may be too early to detect (I’ve heard clear blue can be pants) so did a super market cheapie one. That was negative too.

did another one from my cupboard and it was positive!!!

what the flip? I’m spending more on tests now than I did when I was ttc.

yabu - you’re not pregnant
yanbu - you’re pregnant

Have you tried first response as they’re known for being very good

OCDmama · 13/04/2023 20:22

Ask a pharmacist I reckon. They might be able to advise on how long the tests are really okay for.

justmyluck1234 · 13/04/2023 20:24

Hard to say, can completely see why your confused. With that many positives I'd be inclined to say surely one of those are correct... (doesn't mean I'm right though)

I would go to the GP and request a blood test to be sure.

Jupiter15 · 13/04/2023 20:59

The clear blue one’s aren’t as sensitive, maybe the older tests are more sensitive than the new ones? try an FRER

Coulditreallybe · 13/04/2023 22:06

GAh

I'd say not pregnant and the older tests have been contaminated somehow. I'd still go to the GP and get checked properly before being sure though.

Has anyone heard of this/had this before

Anyone

An in date test is an in date test and no more or less likely to work than any other one. I would check whether the clearblue and supermarket cheapie you’ve done are as sensitive as thrr we old ones. As suggested by pp I’d use a FRER as they’re one of the most sensitive tests out there.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/04/2023 18:15

Were the older tests dry and sealed?
How confusing for you!
I think I would take the tests and chat with a pharmacist.

Mama2six · 14/04/2023 18:19

First response is your best bet.

Un7breakable · 14/04/2023 18:22

Check the sensitivity. Clear blue weeks is not very sensitive.

Call GP on Monday, explain and ask for blood test. Seems odd if there's been more than a few days between tests.

Post on the conception board youll get better advice

BambiOnIce80 · 14/04/2023 18:29

Is there a chance that you're months, rather than weeks, pregnant? There's something called the hook effect that happens when there's very high levels of pregnancy hormone in your wee - the test is swamped and stays negative, even if you're pregnant. The hook effect on an early response test would be reached much sooner than on a test with a lower sensitivity, which might explain your mixed results.

HiKelsey · 14/04/2023 18:34

I'd get a first response or go to GP for a blood test because the tests are sensitive to a certain amount of hormone build up

Lilydoll27 · 06/09/2023 11:54

Can I just ask were the old tests right? I’ve just done an old test and it’s come up positive straight the way. Waiting on new tests to arrive tomorrow but super nervous

Coulditreallybe · 06/09/2023 20:35

@Lilydoll27 no I wasn’t!! The one tests were wrong! I couldn’t believe it because everything on the internet said tests that weren’t past their expiry were fine and would work…..but that clearly wasn’t right

@Lilydoll27 sorry that would say the old tests were wrong
