DC asked to leave swimming lessons, no explanation given

DC is 8, Stage 2 (Yes I know very low stage for their age, long story which involves long covid), they’re not the oldest in their group/class though, there is a 10yo as well (I know the 10yos mum, so know how old they are).

They’re very close to going up a stage, we’re like 5% off 100% for Stage 2 from when I last checked the online thing (we have an online sheet thing that shows progress, but it’s not updated every week so I only check once a month or so)

Just had an email to say they’re terminating the contract with me for the lessons and they hope to see me again soon.

I’ve rang them to ask whats going on, apparently they don’t know why DC can’t carry on in Stage 2; they’re not ready for Stage 3 yet, behaviour is not an issue, DC listens and engages with lessons and enjoys going, teacher has not put a note on the file to say why DCs been kicked out. We have been going about 2 years and have missed 4 lessons in that time – only 2 of those where consecutive lessons due to a holiday, the others where due to illness and a scouts event.

Fees are always paid within 5 days of the invoice coming in (I stopped the direct debit as they kept taking it 3 days before I’m paid, so I now go in on payday and pay it at the counter) this has never been raised as a problem and the manager says I’m not the only parent who pays this way.

Leisure centre manager was going to look into it for me, this was yesterday, he said he’d get back to me within 24 hours as DCs lesson is tomorrow so I need to know whether to take them or not. They’ve been in this class almost 2 years (January 2021) – they’ve moved stages in that time started in the pre-swimming class and have moved through stage 1 and almost completed stage 2 but have had the same teacher throughout as we really like the teacher.

Any ideas why an 8yo would be asked to leave a swimming class with no explanation?

*Just as in yesterday had an email

If they've had the same teacher I would give your DS a break or try a different teacher. You would want them to progress a bit quicker. Sometimes children just need a break and restart...., like driving lessons

Spiderboy · 12/04/2023 17:52

absolutely no one here can give you the answer. You need to speak to the manager

ArcticSkewer · 12/04/2023 17:53

Probably just an admin error. Hope the lessons go well

Comfies · 12/04/2023 17:55

I don't think it's their age tbh. It may be a mix up regarding the payments - maybe new staff in their accounts team or something?

FlounderingFruitcake · 12/04/2023 17:57

Have you asked the 10YOs mum if they’ve had the same? It could be that they’re axing that class completely due for some reason e.g. scheduling issues, teacher leaving and no replacement, doing pool maintenance, to do aqua aerobics instead because it’s more profitable…

@Comfies Sorry if it wasn't clear the 10yo and my 8yo are not the only two in the class, there's 4 others as well all aged between 4 and 6 I'd say - i added about the 10yo to show DC is not the oldest in the class.

Good job you asked on here. It was because thier back crawl was hopeless and beyond teaching.

Yes, I understood! But I meant that I do not think the issue will be with your DC's age.

@FlounderingFruitcake There's 6 in total in the class but they can go up to 12 per class so maybe, will ask if I can, it seems ashame as Thursday afternoons are the only time we can do swimming, so I'd have to look at a further away pool maybe.

I'm not sure you'll find the answer here...

The pooped in the pool.

FlounderingFruitcake · 12/04/2023 18:12

Not saying that is the case of course! Just saying it could be a possible explanation. Seems more likely than they’re kicking just him out given everything you’ve said. But whatever it is I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

neslop · 12/04/2023 18:12

YABU - to expect your question to be answered here

SquidwardBound · 12/04/2023 18:13

Honestly, if your child has been talking swimming lessons for 2 years and has still not passed stage 2, it’s fair to say that these lessons are not working for them.

Maybe a different style of swim school night work better, or one to one lessons, or something.

nighthawk99 · 12/04/2023 18:15

I run a children's sports club and have had this sometimes. Where a child isnt really progressing , itis blocking up the pipeline to stop kids moving up through the system and making spaces at the bottom.I am lucky that i can have a group for these people but other organisations might not be able to find the capacity for this.

3luckystars · 12/04/2023 18:16

Maybe the email was sent in error.

LadyJ2023 · 12/04/2023 18:31

Erm clearly your child isn't progressing for some reason so change teacher or give up lol

That’s fair but I would expect the teacher to discuss with the parent not just cancel and send an email with no explanation.

RoseGoldEagle · 12/04/2023 18:38

Could easily be an admin error, I had this the other day (an email saying my DD’s lessons were terminating and they hoped to see me soon), it was just a system error. I’d have thought if it was for a reason like not progressing, they’d have the courtesy to tell you.

Maybe the teacher meant to send them to Stage 3?

You’d definitely expect discussion about it. Tbh, you’d expect to have had lots of conversations about a child’s lack of progress over two years too.

Catsarefree · 12/04/2023 18:52

I would definitely ring back ASAP to speak to the manager. They really need to consider providing greater clarification in the e mails they send out to parents. If you have already paid for a block of lessons, then you absolutely should show up for the next lesson as they cannot terminate a course of lessons that you have already paid for especially without any explanation. It is clearly not to do with behaviour or standard achieved etc. if they "hope to see you soon".
