To be so unbelievably stupid?

Moved into our house 3 years ago. Noticed very quickly on that the bath was leaking into the kitchen. Perfect!

Got a plumber out, had the bath resealed, new shower, new taps, sink resealed. Etc. nothing stopped it! So we started saving for a new bathroom. Only thing for it.

Except then i got cancer (still having treatment) so that went on the back burner and instead we just ruined towels trying to stop the fucking drip into the kitchen.

We've had more plumbers than I've got fingers come and try and find the bloody leak.

Then I was thinking hmm 🤔 it's been a while actually since we've had a leak what's changed?

The fucking bath tray that I've had for 5 years a lovely wooden one that I've been using in the bath had to be binned because I was sick on it during my chemo nausea that happened unexpectedly in the bath. It always hung over the edge of the bath I knew that but I didn't know it was going over the side and down into the floorboards and the kitchen... if fitted perfectly on our old bath so I thought because even though it was a bit big it was fine Blush

All these plumbers couldn't figure it out because I took it off the bath when they came round so they could see the bath better...

I'm going to call the insurance company in the morning and see if we're covered for accidental damage to replace the flooring.

Please make me feel better about this 😂🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

🤣 oh lord. Must have been an expensive mistake!

rileynexttime · 11/04/2023 09:02

He was lying in the bath with his elbows hanging over the side and letting the water run off his arms onto the floor and through the floor boards. Easily done!

It really isn't.

BobbaMom · 11/04/2023 09:03

The picture on our TV kept flashing on and off until 1 day it failed completely. We shelled out for a new 1, and as we were setting it up realised it was just the scart lead that needed replacing.. 🤦

Magnoliasunrise · 11/04/2023 09:09

OP you should definitely celebrate your discovery after 3 years by treating yourself to some new towels to replace the ruined ones and don't think too much about it. Concentrate on getting yourself well and be glad you have one less thing to worry about. Good luck with the rest of the treatment. X

diddl · 11/04/2023 09:18

So your husband constantly got the floor wet when showering but he didn't make the connection either?

IcakethereforeIam · 11/04/2023 09:32

OP gave me a proper laugh, thank you. Fwiw I think the the tray set up looked lovely no wonder you wanted to keep it. I'm just surprised you ever left the bath.

I called the company electrician out because of a mysterious beep, he traced it to a pager in a nearby drawer. I still cringe.

A pest controller I knew got called out to a cricket infestation. The house holder could hear the insect constantly chirping. That was a expiring smoke alarm they'd bought that was still in its box. A mouse infestation at a school that turned out to be another class's escaped gerbil. A snake in a newly moved into house that was the previous owner's son's snake, a rubber toy one.

While I was waiting at a garage to collect my car. The mechanic resolved another customer's rattling VW Golf by taking the jump leads out of the boot.

Mycoffeemugismassive · 11/04/2023 09:56

Oh bless you! This is the sort of thing I would do!!

Just wanted to say good luck with your ongoing treatment - I’m cancer clear by 2 years now with 6 monthly checks. Hope all goes well with your insurance company

If it gives you some reassurance, I had a friend who had fully renovated a house, they had literally just finished it, his wife ran a bath and fell asleep whilst it was running. There was then a classic series of unfortunate events and the entire house flooded. Insurance assessor could clearly see it hadn’t been done deliberately and they were fully covered. So hope it all goes ok!

harriethoyle · 11/04/2023 10:10

@iamanidiottt we got a new hoover. My DH was away (he does most of the housework) and I needed to run it round the spare room before having guests. I could not work out how to switch the bloody thing on. On the phone to DH as he tried to talk me through it, practically at the point of throwing the hoover out of the window. Until we converted the whatsapp call to a video call and he pointed out I hadn't switched the hoover on at the plug....

I have never been allowed to forget it!

Eve · 11/04/2023 10:22

To make you feel better we had a regular beep in the kitchen for months that seemed to be coming from the dishwasher signalling an error, we took the dishwasher apart , cleaned it numerous times, got a dishwasher engineer to come take it apart but could not find the issue.

We went on holiday and DS was back from Uni to dog sit... he discovered the source of the beep was the smart meter that's plugged in above the dishwasher and it was beeping to say there was a message! It had the same sounding sodding beep as the dishwasher!

FloraPostIt · 11/04/2023 10:27

I called the plumber out as there was no power to my boiler. I'd waited four days as it was Easter.. It's in her attic and the power switch next to it was dead. I tried changing the fuse to no avail. Two or three plumbers arrived and were going up and down the loft ladder. Then one of them pointed to a random switch at the bottom of the main stairs, nowhere near the boiler, and asked what it did. I had no idea. He flicked it on and lo! There was power. It was right under a light switch so easily done. But four days with no hot water and a £40 call-out fee... the idiot tax was high that day.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/04/2023 10:39

We thought we had ‘weak electricity’ in our new sitting room as the table lights were very dim. When we changed the bulbs for brighter ones, it didnt make much difference.

we had the electrician round for the kitchen refit, and asked him to take a look. He turned the dimmer switch on the wall up…..tbf, we had no idea that that wall switch had anything to do with the sockets, and we just turned the lamps on and off at their switches, as we always had. Apparently the wall fitting was ‘illegal’ according to the electrician, and he disconnected it .

gingergiraffe · 11/04/2023 11:20

We had new windows fitted, twice, because they were so poorly done. Had whole bedroom replastered, redecorated and new carpet. Discovered our window frame was cracked so that had to be replaced. Then we had heavy rain and water came pouring in around the frame. I was furious and had the surveyor out yet again. He stood on our flat roof with a hosepipe until the water came pouring through again. The roof was shot! It was a bit embarrassing but given all the previous hassle the company had caused we didn’t feel too bad.

OhcantthInkofaname · 12/04/2023 18:44

I hope that you continue to do well!

Teaismymiddlename · 12/04/2023 18:57

I once phoned a plumber because my electric shower was making an awful noise. No matter if I turned it on or off it was humming really loud and wouldn't stop.

They text to say they were on their way and I went into the bathroom to make sure there were no pants etc hanging about when I looked up...

When I'd finished in the shower earlier I'd put my electric razor behind the pole on the tray.... And obviously not turned it off properly.
The buzzing shower was infact my lady shaver vibrating against the pole... 😳

He was very nice and laughed so much I never got charged a call out fee 😂😂

Heard through the grapevine at work about a garage customer who asked to have her entire dashboard pretty much pulled apart, as she kept finding brown liquid on her right leg after she'd been driving. Wasn't until she picked the keys up after an unsuccessful check over, that they saw a small brown puddle on the desk.
Turns out it was one of those glitter liquid filled plastic pouch keyrings that had a small puncture! Cost her a fair bit to find it out too IIRC.

Sewaccidentprone · 12/04/2023 20:13

a few years ago I decided to replace the very old bathroom suite. It was an old cast iron bath, so had to break it up with a sledgehammer.

good job we removed it when we did as water had been leaking down the sides of the bath and 2 joists and quite a few floorboards had to be replaced. The front foot in the corner had gone through the floorboard. It could have been a major disaster if you think about the combined weight of bath, water and person🤕

Lindyloomillion1 · 12/04/2023 20:44

Glad you solved the problem. We've all done ridiculous things like this, don't beat yourself up about it!
And good luck with your treatment. More than enough reason for overlooking other things!

nymum · 12/04/2023 21:03

I feel for you op! It happens but it’s so embarrassing! I had a plumber come because the bottom of the sink cupboard was becoming warped but I couldn’t detect a leak. Plumber couldn’t either even after using a camera behind the cupboard. He was going to drill a hole in the ceiling below to see if he could find a leak but I declined thank goodness. It was our toothbrush holder on the sink ledge providing a small but steady drip down the side of the sink, down the cupboard and pooling at the bottom. 🤦‍♀️

LoisLane66 · 12/04/2023 21:09

How on earth does a bath tray leak water? Is it one of those with slats which hold a sponge, possibly soap or maybe a glass of wine and a book, if do, how does it hold water to the extent of it slopping on the floor? How full do you fill the bath?

It wasn't leaking during baths- OP's husband was leaving the bath tray in situ while he was showering, meaning water was funnelling off and down the tray.

LoisLane66 · 12/04/2023 21:14

@WindyWends
Ah...thanks. I'll read ALL the posts next time. 🤭

Many years ago my Ddad was being driven mad by a strange rattling noise in the car (TBH he was constantly obsessed by strange car noises) and took it into the garage numerous, and ultimately futile, times to try to find the source.

Turned out it was an Extra Strong Mint rattling around the glove box.

RachaelN · 12/04/2023 21:32

I literally bought one of these today and now I'm going to be paranoid 😂

Unsure33 · 12/04/2023 21:54

I have a worse one . We had a water cut for days . Then it came back on . I came back from work and there was a loud noise from our bathroom / loft . I could hear it from downstairs . I feared it was an air lock or the tank , and was about to go to my neighbour for help . Luckily I did not because when my OH came in , he rushed up to the loft , only to find a forgotten vibrator in a suitcase had mysteriously started and was going full pelt . 😳

Amabitnewhere · 12/04/2023 22:44

Are you absolutely sure that is the problem? I had the kitchen ceiling fall on us - narrowly missing my children, because someone has put silicon over a chip in the bath and the leaking water from every time we bathed had been saturating the ceiling. I beg you to be careful and make sure there's nothing else at play. i'd had the pipes checked, the taps etc too and even when the ceiling fell off it still took ages for various plumbers to work out what had happened. It was a small chip so not obvious tbh, and we were fairly new tenants so weren't aware of any prior work.
