Bathroom fitting - no toilet

We're having our bathroom redone at the moment and it's the only toilet in the house. We went away over the Easter weekend as we didn't have the shower installed but the fitters were in over the weekend doing some bits on Saturday (due to issues with the delivery of stuff they were a bit behind, but we didn't ask/expect them to come over the bank holiday weekend). We've come back and there is no toilet - it won't be installed until tomorrow but we did tell the fitters we'd be back today.

We're having it done through B&Q, am I unreasonable to complain about this or is it just something you should expect when having a bathroom redone? Should we just suck it up and book a hotel (obviously ultimately we will have to do this, but I'm annoyed we had no forewarning)? They started at the start of last week but didn't leave us overnight without a loo at any point.

Not acceptable especially when you told them you'd be back today. Would agree with everyone that you should just go and get a camping loo ( The big bucket ones are fine with a bit of water and a squirt of zoflora in them. You should have an inspection hatch in your garden that you can empty it into.

I don’t think it’s normal.

When my parents had their bathroom done last year the fitters put it back in while they were doing other things and this was also offered to us when we had our bathroom done in February. I would complain OP.

Completely unacceptable- they should know better

mastertomsmum · 10/04/2023 16:10

Just had our bathroom done and if they had not been able to reinstall in one day there would have been a camping style loo available. If it had been part of the plan not to do this element of the works in one day, there would have been a portaloo. We were not left without access to bath or shower either as they completed shower works before bath works.

SalviaDivinorum · 10/04/2023 16:12

Totally unacceptable.

We've never been left without a working lavatory during refits.

Mind you - this is B&Q....

DurhamDurham · 10/04/2023 16:20

We've had a couple of bathroom refits over the years and have never been left without a working toilet. The rest of the bathroom has been pulled apart but at the end of each day we've either had the old toilet left plumbed in or the new one installed.

CeliaNorth · 10/04/2023 16:22

I had my bathroom fitted by B&Q. Everything else was stripped out, tiles taken off walls, but the old loo was left in place until the fitter was ready to install the new loo. I was never without a loo overnight, only for the time it took to take out the old one and fit the new one. (I might have had to use a bucket to flush it while the work was ongoing, I don't remember.)

StillWantingADog · 10/04/2023 16:25

Not normal in my experience. Might be unavoidable in some situations but I’d expect a clear warning not just being left to turn up and find no toilet!

BadgerFacedCoo · 10/04/2023 16:26

I've just had a brand new bathroom done and we were without a loo for about 40 mins.

I'd complain, it's poor planning on their part and you might get a voucher as an apology.

Roselilly36 · 10/04/2023 16:29

Not normal in my experience at all, not to have a toilet, particularly if it’s the only loo in the property, had lots of bathroom refits over the years.

Craftybodger · 10/04/2023 16:37

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable to expect a loo overnight every night. But it will be quicker overall if you can go without.

I think it’s poor of them but less remarkable as you’ve gone with a large company, small businesses whilst costing more usually have a higher level of understanding with things like this.

Our
atest bathroom refit has just been done- whole room completely ripped out and changed. I noticed the fitter had left the old toilet in days after taking everything else out, and said to him there’s no need because we’ve got an en-suite and a downstairs loo. He said it was more for his own benefit because it was easier to use that one than tramp around the house finding the others 😀
