This is a terrible name for a parking app

"Pay by phone". Ok, but how do I pay by phone? "Pay by phone".

It reads like a bad joke and is really confusing. I even have the app and this sign still confused me this morning. Heaven help you if don't know it's the name of an app and you want to pay by phone.

That sign is not referring to the PayByPhone app.

It is telling you that you have the option to pay by phone. There will probably be a ringo sign or various other parking apps you can use. That code is for a car park in Glasgow using Ringo

I got a parking ticket after being confused by these signs! The next road is ringo so I wrongly assumed pay by phone meant it was also ringo…

It’s been around forever, can’t see how it’s that confusing tbh, I’ve had the app always, their logo is plastered all over the payment machines and it’s very clear it’s an app

The sign doesn't say Paybyphone so not obvious at all that what is written as an instruction is actually an incorrect way of writing the name of an app.

In the absence of any other signage I wouldnt know what to do either if I didn't have the right change for the machine

UrsulaBelle · 10/04/2023 14:38

Just put the code into my paybyphone app, not recognised! So it must be Ringo. How confusing. I have both apps on my phone and Apcoa too!

Queen Margaret Drive Glasgow ?

Yep. We paid using coins so now I'm even more confused. I don't know if it's actually the name of the app or RingGo, or Apcoa, or JustPark, or one of the zillion other apps I have to have just in case I park somewhere like this.

hadn't heard of the PayByPhone app either. That sign is definitely giving a generic instruction rather than specifying an app. "Pay by phone" vs "PayByPhone"

Parking meter will likely be covered in Ringo signs/instructions as that seems to be the only app that recognises the location code.

There might be non payment argument here, as it is the signage that instructs you on what to do and what the parking restrictions are. The parking meter is not a sign. An app appearing to bear the name quoted on the sign exists but fails to recognise the location, and the sign must be indicating an app rather than instructing you to call a phone number as no number is specified.

Awful name I agree.

The only war on the motorist is on parking charges, parking apps and fines.

PayByPhone is the app used here, but the signage is so much better than in the OP's photo, so I can only imagine it's up to local council 'rules' as to how explicit the signs have to be. Here it's very clear that it's the name of an app, tells you how/where to find it to download, and the parking codes are in larger font on their own sign compared to the OP's photo too.

Perhaps complain to whoever legislates for parking signage in your area, OP?

FWIW, PayByPhone is generally easy to use - I've shown non-locals how to install/use it, and they've done it in a few moments - but it is a pain when it 'goes down'! (Although local parking enforcement are told when that happens, so don't give any tickets for the duration of the outage).

I'm starting to think we're luckier than a lot of places when it comes to parking 🤔

I agree the sign is confusing. If it wants you to use an app it should display the logo.
