Gran perplexed by my kids getting viruses

I have two little ones. 1 and 3. They pick up viruses fairly frequently. But actually my 3 year old has picked up fewer viruses compared to when she started nursery last year. Last year she picked something up nearly every week.

I'm careful and take them both to the doctors / hospital when required. But usually it really is just another virus flying around and you can't do much about it.

I make them wash/ clean hands frequently etc.

My MIL is obsessed by the fact that something can be done to avoid these viruses.. ( and no, she doesn't think they should be kept indoors or away from child care settings ). She thinks I need to talk to the doctor and ask about what could possibly be done and maybe they keep getting the same thing again and again and maybe need to be on antibiotics for a few moths because that's what helped done of her kids with recurrent tonsillitis.

My kids aren't unusual, they're just at the ages and in settings where they'll pick up bugs and we can't do a lot about it. I've had blood tests done privately and things looked OK. It's bugging me she keeps saying I need to ' look into it '. They're not more sick than any other kids I know. The last half term they've not been sick at all. The first half of term they were sick once. It's not excessive. What does happen is that they get one bug and then another one quite soon after. I've been assured by doctors that this is quite common though.

Any advice ? Am I missing something ? Did we not get as many bugs back in the day ? Or has my MIL just forgotten ?

In your situation I would tell her I had looked into it (as you have because you got their blood tested, and have had assurances from the doctor) and the doctor has said it is just because they are 'catching up on the bugs they missed during COVID' or something.

DM thought the same. Then she started volunteering in Reception, and was never so ill in her life!

That is a slightly extreme way of learning that "small kids get bugs". I'm not sure what else to say. Your dc and their peers have missed 3 years of social mixing, and exposure to virus, there do seem to be an awful lot of "lurgies" going around this year.
