Newly diagnosed adhd 36 year old woman, desperate to fix my life and reach my potential! Shamelessly posting on here as I think there's a relatively wide nd community or seems to be. Women in particular can you share your experiences and if you are now medicated and it's helped you get your ducks in a row? So YABU - not medicated YANBU - medicated thank you xxx

But it took two different ones to find the right medication
It’s not a magic want. It does help me get on and have a less chatty brain. Which is lovely

Sprinkles21 · 09/04/2023 19:50

Thank you so much 💗

Not yet but I hope to be soon so following with interest!

I was given the form to provide evidence over a year ago. Still haven't filled it out.
I think that should be evidence enough! 😂

DH is- takes a slow release vyvanse in the morning and a short release dex around 4pm. If we didn't have dc then he would be fine just with the vyvanse but it's a struggle to get through dinner bath bed and the life admin that can only be done outside of work otherwise.

spottygymbag · 09/04/2023 20:07

@ThisIsTrifficult we joke that the process should count as a diagnosis itself. If you can navigate all the appointments and paperwork first time with no assistance or prompting then adhd is not the problem. It took so many missed appointments, out of date referral letters etc to finally get it all pushed through!

EstrellasPride · 09/04/2023 20:09

I tried many different meds. I get gastric side effects which aren't pleasant. Which means I tend not to take it outside of me having a regular schedule - ie uni, a job, etc.

LittleRedYarny · 09/04/2023 20:28

I take medication (Vvyanse) but it’s not a magic bullet and you need to couple it with coaching and good habits (argh!)

I also find that the effectiveness of my Vvyanse depends on my hormonal cycle.

I did have a rough couple weeks when I first started taking it due to side effects but now day to day I don’t have any as long as I’m well hydrated.

I do get mini episodes of side effects if I’m off the medication for a week or so (when I had covid and when I had an op.)

if you do go down the route of medication then don’t panic to much with the side effects and give it a few weeks before you judge. And keep chugging water :) Good luck!

Irishbell · 09/04/2023 20:32

It’s been great. I have a definite Uber productive 3-4 hours a day and have had a promotion at work due to being the most “productive and conscientious”. U heard of pre-dx
the come down is not nice though and lots of panic/ irritability and sadness comes but I just tell myself it’s the meds and wait for the next day.

Sprinkles21 · 09/04/2023 20:33

This is brilliant info thank you what issues do you find come up during or before your period?

Not yet as I was diagnosed while pregnant and then moved. So I've to wait now to see a psychiatrist at the local adult adhd clinic.

Mylittlesandwich · 09/04/2023 20:35

Unfortunately not as I was told I don't meet the threshold for medication in my area. I've been referred back to psychiatry for some "other help" whatever that looks like.

What is their threshold? Surely the threshold is the presence of a diagnosis?

taleasolasgrime · 09/04/2023 20:45

I take Xaggitin, the lowest dose. Not taken it in about a week as I've been on annual leave and don't really need it.

I like it generally except for sometimes the side effects mean I chew the insides of my mouth which can be painful.

Mylittlesandwich · 09/04/2023 20:46

@TreeQuestion6 this was my thoughts. When they said I couldn't get medication I asked if that meant I didn't have adhd. She sad, no you do but in this area we don't feel it impacts you enough to need medicated. So that really cleared that up...

garlicandsapphires · 09/04/2023 20:47

I am. It’s very helpful but not a magic bullet. And they’re not very good for you I dont think so cant imagine I’ll be on them long term.

Medsbalance · 09/04/2023 21:08

Diagnosed in late thirties here. I was offered medication after diagnosis and it worked wonders. The first med - methylphenidate helped but felt awful after it wore off. The second one - lisdexamfetamine works for around 12 hours and doesn't give any major side effects even if I take a day off every week.

You asked about experienced and I found it just made things easier - especially with work tasks. Pre medication lots of tasks would be forgotten or I would spend ages procrastinating but with the medication I can just sit down and do the task and prioritise the others a lot more effectively.

Meds seem to work differently for everyone but they were certainly a game changer for me. Hope you find an option that works for you

Sprinkles21 · 09/04/2023 21:12

Thank you it's so refreshing to see I'm not alone in this. I have a very small circle and none have experiences like I do this is all so helpful xx

I am not medicated but after seeing how my son has managed since starting medication I am thinking about it more. It has certainly not been perfect for him in terms of side effects but the difference at school and how he manages at home has been really positive. It’s the school holidays and there have been a couple of days he hasn’t had it and I had almost forgotten how he is without it.
