my daughter is in a&e she’s 15 weeks old. whole house has been down with a bug - dh had temp of 41 last night and both daughtwrs have been 39/40

i called 111 earlier for baby as she was 39.7 and not coming down after calpol at a normal rate, and her breathing was sucking in at ribs and throat. she had a week in hospital for bronchiolitis when she was a month old on oxygen so i’m anxious about that now.

anuway 111 sent ambulance who brought us here. she’s had covid test and a blood test and cannula and will possibly need a lumbar puncture. i feel like a drama queen now though i’ve said whole household is down with the same thing i’m sure. now she’s going to have to go through the pain of a lumbar puncture when it’s something we probably all have. i feel so bad i wish i’d just phoned 111 for myself and got myself tested and then i could just assume she had the same

Nope you’ve not overreacted. They don’t give babies lumbar punctures for fun. My DC1 had one at 3 months too. It’s upsetting but they won’t let you watch. He soon calmed down. In my case it was viral meningitis but he was treated for bacterial.

You’ve done the right thing.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 09/04/2023 18:41

They don’t offer lumbar punctures for no reason.

At 15 weeks it’s harder to fight infections. You did the right thing and I hope that your dd is ok.

mamabear715 · 09/04/2023 18:42

My now 28 yr old had the same symptoms as your little one as a baby, & he had pneumonia & was in hospital quite a while.
Better to be safe than sorry, I'm sure the doctors & nurses think the same.

lljkk · 09/04/2023 18:44

It sounds like she was struggling to breathe, OP could see that, A&E can see that. I can't see that you did wrong, OP.

Stickmansmum · 09/04/2023 18:44

Even if it’s the same thing, your baby may need completely different treatment. And it’s also important to rule everything out because even if you all have Covid, the baby could have Covid and something else.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 09/04/2023 18:47

No you didn't over react. It doesn't matter if you have the same thing as little ones can react differently and deteriorate very quickly.

thegrain · 09/04/2023 18:50

As PP said they won't be doing a lumbar puncture for fun.

100% this. Yeah it isn't a nice thing for her to have at all but they wouldn't do it if they didn't feel it was necessary.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

bluesocks5 · 09/04/2023 19:05

thank you all for responses. i just feel so guilty she’s not even 4 months old yet and has had oxygen, feeding tubes, cannular and now needs lumbar puncture i just feel so sad for her. and my toddler at home keeps asking my husband where baby is and where i am and i just feel like the worst parent ever

My (now ten month old) ex premmie had sepsis and bronchiolitis at 8 weeks old and had lumbar puncture etc. she ended up on ventilator for a week, they don’t muck around with babies but you are def in the right place and I promise you’ve done the right thing. My baby doesn’t remember anything and has had all sorts of lines etc. really hope she feels better soon.

Americano75 · 09/04/2023 19:18

Of course you haven't overreacted, you've done the right thing for your wee one. Please keep us updated.

LakeTiticaca · 09/04/2023 19:20

You did the right thing. Young babies can become very ill very quickly so she is in exactly the right place x

dinmin · 09/04/2023 19:23

You did the right thing OP. 111 wouldn’t have done anything for you as you’re an adult and much less fragile than she is. The rib sucking in is a red flag for sure - she would have been struggling more then you with the same illness

Hesma · 09/04/2023 19:27

I don’t want to scare you but it’s better she’s being checked and having tests than not bothering and it being too late. You’ve definitely done the right thing. Sending love and good vibes for you both

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 09/04/2023 19:35

@Hesma

My now teenager had a lumbar puncture and cannulas at 5 weeks due to high infection markers in her blood and a massive temperature.

It's so frightening but I felt so safe the minute we got taken to the ward and my baby was being looked after and tested quickly

Turns out she had a bad ear infection and was on Iv antibiotics for two days before going home.

mamabear715 · 09/04/2023 20:24

You are very much NOT a bad parent, @bluesocks5
You did exactly the right thing.
I hope you're soon all reunited at home, hugs.

lljkk · 09/04/2023 20:50

You didn't make her sick, OP. It's just bad luck, people live with germs & sometimes the germs make us ill. There's nothing fair or to blame anyone about it. I hope you can update soon with good news. x

Hankunamatata · 09/04/2023 20:57

I had same with one of mine. We were in isolation for a week as they suspected meningitis but turns out it was a severe infection. Don't feel guilty, it's better for baby to have diagnostics tests and treatment than become even more poorly

CleaningOutMyCloset · 09/04/2023 21:01

Babies get very poorly very quickly op. What you or I might shake off with a few pain killers and bed rest could be very dangerous for a baby. You did the right thing. The hospital wouldn't do things like lumbar punctures without needing to do them. You are not being unreasonable, you did the right thing.
