Media blackout on the NHS

Gigihadr · 08/04/2023 07:58

Is it just me or is there a media blackout on the upcoming junior doctors strikes?

There has been generally on the strikes. A teacher friend said there were tens of thousands protesting in Central London last time and it didn't make the news.

ModeWeasel · 08/04/2023 08:05

There is no blackout. How would this work? Who would arrange it and why?

MarshaBradyo · 08/04/2023 08:06

No as I’ve heard reports and discussion on it in the media

LizzyBennett · 08/04/2023 08:08

It was in the front page of the BBC website the other day.

I think people are just generally fatigued by strike need so it's not as prominent at the moment

LizzyBennett · 08/04/2023 08:08

Strike news!

BHRK · 08/04/2023 08:09

Read the papers! There has been days of coverage of the strikes. And also BBC etc

newjobnewstartihope · 08/04/2023 08:23

lol yeah that's why everyone is aware of it
If you mean there's been a lack of articles stirring to pot and trying to create hate then maybe that's because generally everyone backs them?

MarshaBradyo · 08/04/2023 08:24

Check out R4 from about five minutes ago on their app

You’ll hear discussion on it

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 08/04/2023 09:25

I've been part of the transport strikes and the media paid us no mind unless it was to complain the trains weren't running. They never report on the details of the WHY, only how it affects people. If people knew the WHY (and I support the NHS/teachers/civil service etc on all their claims) then us frontline folks wouldn't be getting so much criticism from the public.

Gigihadr · 09/04/2023 00:22

I hadn’t seen anything which made me think this was the case

The strikes are being reported but you have to actively look. They are definitely not on the mainstream news, particularly television news.

There were approximately 50,000 teachers, doctors, civil servants and more marching through London a couple of weeks ago and it hardly got a mention.

The media bias is shocking.

It's been the lead story every hour on Sky News!

I think it’s definitely getting lots of media attention.

I’ve just been reading about the ‘catastrophic impact’ on waiting lists on the Guardian app.

Not to mention the enormous strain it will put on budgets. My friend (a consultant) is being paid £3k per day to cover striking junior doctors.

Yes this.

The disruption the junior doctor strikes have caused and the amount of money its costing to persuade consultants to act down and cover is scary- yet the media isn't really saying much. It's purposeful that they are quiet about it, yes they have reported on it but not headlines and not explained the extent of it. Good for JDs though, shows they're serious this time and will hopefully get FPR.

TeenLifeMum · 10/04/2023 13:28

I’m a media manager in a hospital. If we say we’re coping well, we’ll piss off all our doctors but if we’d say patients will suffer then we’re responsible for panic that will ensue. The argument is between them and the government and not the hospital so we’re not commenting unless we need to communicate specific operational info. Media keep asking for interviews so I don’t think there’s a black out.

stbrandonsboat · 10/04/2023 13:30

Strikes are just part of life now and you tend not to think too much about stuff that's a routine part of life. This country is now so crap that I automatically assume there's no medical or emergency help anyway and would factor that in if something did occur.
