Hospital scan - AIBU

Before I start I do not blame the NHS here in the slightest I know there’s staff pressures, cuts etc but I am miffed at this.

I’m 30 weeks pregnant and was admitted to hospital today with rib pain, a migraine, blurred vision etc.

was told about 8.30pm I had to go for a head CT scan and that they’d be down in about 45 mins to get me. I said that’s fine. They came back about 90 mins later and said I would go down shortly, I said yep that’s fine. They came back another hour later to say the team had gone and it would be the morning time instead. Again I said that was fine I understood these things happen.

i haven’t slept right in about a week because baby is breech and my ribs are in agony so the hospital bed actually allowed me to get some decent sleep. Then the nurse came in whilst I was sleeping to wake me up to do obs and say they were taking me down now for the scan. I was a little groggy but said ok

Over an hour later, nearly 4am in the morning, I’m still waiting on the scan, no one has come near me since and the baby is awake and kicking like crazy in my ribs again. I can’t get comfy and not even sure if I go back to sleep because I don’t know when they’re coming in.

i’m hormonal and tired and feeling really frustrated now and exceptionally sore again I know it’s not staff fault but surely this is a bit shitty)

YANBU!

Go back to sleep, I seriously doubt 4am would be a time to be getting a 'morning' scan.

Ask the staff how long it will be and say you’re uncomfortable- hope it goes ahead soon and you feel better too.

BlueJellycat · 08/04/2023 03:57

You have every right to be cheesed off. Try to go back to sleep

Mightyouandiconfabulate · 08/04/2023 04:54

Annoying.
They do have priority emergency patients (think unconscious brain bleed or traumatic brain injuries through car accidents/falls/fights, bowel/liver perforations)
So they will get bumped up the list to the top as they are life or death.
This will be annoying and frustrating for the staff on your ward on your behalf too and they will be advocating and pushing for your scan in the background, be assured.
I know you are uncomfortable and shattered but a scan won’t change this for you. So go back to sleep if you can, take it easy, the scan will be whenever so do your own thing until then.

YANBU. I had my baby last week and the delays I experienced were completely unimaginable (4 days spent on an ante natal ward after being admitted for an “urgent” induction, 7 hours waiting in the delivery room for my induction to start). Have they checked your blood pressure, out of interest?

custardbear · 08/04/2023 05:45

I take it they've checked first for pre-eclampsia

This is thing with the state of the NHS. With those symptoms described by the OP it stands to reason and seems completely logical for most people that pre-eclampsia would be absolutely the first thing doctors would consider.

But the NHS is so atrocious at the moment it’s perfectly feasible that no one has.

OP, please, please make sure this has been checked, because your symptoms are classic.

I hope you are getting some more sleep now 💐

PurBal · 08/04/2023 06:12

How are you feeling now? Have you got some sleep? I know you don’t want to blame the NHS but I don’t think this is acceptable. I’ve accessed X-rays and CTs abroad. X-ray was non urgent (I needed it for a visa): you just turned up at the hospital, took a ticket, waited for your number to be called and were in and out in 30 minutes. CT was part of a wider package of care DH received, we were in a “developing country” but all the care he received took a few hours. So no, this is not okay. We’ve become used to inadequate care because we are desperate to believe in universal healthcare and know the NHS is stretched. So we understandably forgive the staff and give them grace. But that doesn’t make it okay. Blame the government if you find it more palatable.

Oh I have no both blaming the Tories for it 😂 I remember being in hospital a few years back and just looking at how chaotic and actually to be brutally honest how unsafe it was looking round that particular night and the staff were so exhausted and I just thought woke this is the snowballed effect of Tory cuts.

i have private insurance with work so might check that

nurse came in this morning and was so apologetic about last night and said she doesn’t know what time I’ll be scanned but hopefully it’s sometime this morning.

yeah got checked for pre eclampsia but no protein in urine and I honestly think the migraine was just brought on by lack of sleep with the baby being in my ribs
