Building work next door over the Easter holidays

Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 15:19

Hey up Mumsnetters

I've got a bit of a dillemma / annoyance, see what you think...

The new neighbour next to me has been working on his property for months and months now, massive loft conversion and extention into the back garden. I live in a three bed Semi and our gardens are right next to each other. Now I have had no problems what-so-ever with all of this (apart from it annoyed me on Chrsitams day a bit, but we were hardly out in the garden then so it was just mildly annoying).

As you can imagine it's very noisy, building, banging, drilling, having fires, stuff blowing into our garden (albeit accidentally) and when all the crew come round they are all shouting to communicate with each other and basically we have just put up with it as understandibly it is going to be very noisy, fair enough.

Now the weather is warming up a bit I feel that it's invading on my privacy in the garden as they are all on the roof and it's just really disruptive. I know I need to bare with it and it will be much better when the work is completed. However, I'm worried about Easter Sunday. I've got family coming round and want to do an Easter egg hunt in the garden and have happy vibes, not shouting over the noise next door!

I've been toying with the idea of going round and just asking politely if they can give it a rest for one day on Sunday. I was sitting in the garden earlier trying to listen to the birds tweeting, haha and I can just feel myself getting wound up! My other half has said noooooo don't go round, we'll just make as much noise as we like and get on with the day and I don't want any beef really either - It would be an awkward conversation.

I know I'm a bit naughty but earlier on I was singing and whistling, to try and overcome the noise (yes I'm getting passive agressive now) and then my other half said quietly...."babe put a bra on everyone will be getting an eye-full" for context I have a long comfy dress on nothing revealing and I just said loudly - "what If I wanted to sunbathe in my bikini on a lovely day like today?"

Anyway I have now gone in the kitchen and turned up classic FM with the patio doors open (it's not massively loud) haha baddie me - still sat here wondering if I should go round and say something about Sunday (one day of peace and then they can crack on).

Am I being unreasonable?

I do actually want them to get on with it and bugger off - maybe it'll make them work faster if I put some speed garage on...happy hardcore?

It’s always best to ask. I’m glad you have it sorted for Sunday. When my neighbours built their extension one of my DC was doing lockdown school exams on Teams. I gave them a timetable of when it would be good to have silence and they stuck to it. If they wanted to work later or weekends I was fine with that. Give and take innit.

Schmutter · 07/04/2023 17:46

For one thing, it nothing whatsoever to to with the building regulations.

’Noisy work’ is prohibited on Sundays and Bank Holidays. This is generally considered to be the noise from power tools etc, not construction work in general. It’s enforced under an environmental protection act. You could report them to the council, but unless they’re doing something very distrusting, the council will do precisely nothing. Haha.

If it’s annoying you, go and speak to them or the owners. Haha.

Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 17:52

It's sorted now for Sunday so thanks guys

My other half is a more responsible adult than me and I just took the childish route

Is it wrong that the idea of annoying them back with ridiculous tunes is quite appealing, noise pollution you say? They might just hurry the project up faster

They are actually still out there working on it...one of the dudes is near enough hanging over my garden so I have to scuttle down to the bottom of my garden passed him...I don't really want to speak to them you know, fuck offout of my space

A bikini on a lovely day like today?

Is it a lot warmer somewhere else in the UK today then? It’s beautifully sunny but it’s still jumper and coat weather where I am. Certainly not stripping down to swimwear. Brrr

Calling · 07/04/2023 18:00

OP, next time try some Richard Wagner on at full blast!

TrickorTreacle · 07/04/2023 18:01

nomoremerlot · 07/04/2023 16:58

@Sammy900 classic fm, up loud? A step too far I feel! Be careful of repercussions

Don't be careful of repercussions.

Be careful with the percussion instead, especially with the timpanis, as after all it's Classic FM!

mondaytosunday · 07/04/2023 18:04

Don't be passive aggressive. There are strict laws about building work. Look it up. They are to end by 1pm Saturday and not happen at all on Sundays.

Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 18:14

Richard Wagner - high five to that

OP posts:
Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 18:17

I was thinking more the predator soundtrack - Alan Silvestri haha

Schmutter · 07/04/2023 18:18

As I said upthread. The rules apply to noisy work only. Not construction work in general. Our opposite neighbours are having a new house built on their land. Bricklayers started at 8am this am and finished at 4. We could hear them, but was it ‘noisy work’? No.

Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 18:19

haha Trickortreacle - be careful of the percussions not the repercussions

love it

OP posts:
Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 18:23

Schmutter - no I know it's fine normally, I get it - he's building it's going to be noisy I just feel that they could've layed off it on a bank holiday weekend - no pun intended

ChickenDhansak82 · 07/04/2023 18:23

Just get a speaker in the garden and put one of those hideous Parry Gripp songs on repeat. They'll soon take a very long tea break and stop working.

My kids love putting Space Tacos on repeat then singing at the top of their voices!

Sammy900 · 07/04/2023 18:25

Brilliant! Dare I youtube it? :D
