My son was weighed 12/1 he was 25lbs (11.3kg), I weighed him yesterday and he was 22lbs (10kg). He was unwell in Jan with Covid and again in Feb with a different virus. He has been eating well since and seems well within himself. The nursery always record he eats all of his food everyday (3-days a week). Yet he’s lost 10lbs in a short space of time. I wanted to ask whether anyone has experienced something similar and I guess for some reassurance.

thanks, 😊

That's a 3lb loss? Unless my maths is wrong?

FangedFrisbee · 07/04/2023 12:35

25lb to 22lb isn't 10 pounds.

x2boys · 07/04/2023 12:36

Go to.the Gp.,or health visitor ,he should be growing and putting on weight not losing it.

TomatoSandwiches · 07/04/2023 12:36

3lbs? After an illness that's normal.

Sapphire387 · 07/04/2023 12:37

He's lost 3lbs... if he was ill for much of Jan and Feb and off his food then I wouldn't be overly worried but would probably mention it to the health visitor.

Sapphire387 · 07/04/2023 12:39

Also... when you say 'he was weighed' and then you weighed him yourself... were these two different set of scales? I'd be wondering if both were accurate.

FlounderingFruitcake · 07/04/2023 12:42

25-22 = 3 and 3lbs is not a great deal. Perfectly explainable by him being ill. Or the bathroom scales not being zeroed properly. Or heavier clothing. I’d just keep an eye on it and expect him to be gaining weight again soon. He can’t have lost almost half his body weight so assuming 10lbs is a typo…

YellowGreenBlue · 07/04/2023 12:44

It's easy for scales to be a pound or two wrong so this wouldn't worry me (assuming it's 3lb not 10lb).

GoldDustt · 07/04/2023 13:01

3lb isn't alarming after illness

Gincan · 07/04/2023 13:03

Do you have any baby clinics you can take him to get weighed at by a health visitor? They'll have accurate scales and can see where he is on the graph / tell you what to do

ApolloandDaphne · 07/04/2023 14:46

Were they different scales? He hasn't lost 10lb as other have said, he appears to be down 3lb but that could be due to a discrepancy in the scales.

Endofmytether2020 · 07/04/2023 14:53

That's more than 10% of his body weight, so I would be talking to the health visitor urgently. Weight loss could possibly mean something like type one diabetes which can be triggered by covid so it's worth checking out.

WorriedMama1 · 07/04/2023 15:05

If he's down 3lb and has been poorly I don't think that's particularly unusual but definitely something to keep an eye on. I remember my dd losing a bit of weight around her 1 year check but she had been unwell. They weighed again a few weeks later and it was going back up.

If he has infact lost 10lb I would be getting him to see a gp as a matter of urgency as that is a significant amount and could indicate other issues
