Cuts to funding

jgw1 · 06/04/2023 10:01

AIBU to think that we should not discuss the cuts to funding of services over the past 13 years, for example, schools, child protection, criminal justice because some people find some discussions offensive.

are you saying no-one should ever discuss these things? There are certain subjects I would flag as trigger subjects and they is definitely not one of them

Sirzy · 06/04/2023 12:53

What I find offensive is how many people are being left to suffer because of the cuts.

Eviebeans · 06/04/2023 13:02

Who do you think would find this offensive
I find the cuts in funding offensive

twinkletoesimnot · 06/04/2023 13:04

YA definitely BU

SouthCountryGirl · 06/04/2023 13:05

If we followed that logic would we ever discuss anything?

Merryoldgoat · 06/04/2023 13:06

What?

MumOf2workOptions · 06/04/2023 13:08

What absolute nonsense op

The cuts are the cuts
They're awful and putting people in dire situations but I doubt anyone would find them offensive as such - what do you mean by this??

Battlecat98 · 06/04/2023 13:10

Nope as taxpayers we should absolutely discuss cuts. Let people see the government for what they are

pinkySilver · 06/04/2023 13:37

Except there would be no discussion. There would be the usual ranting and over simplification and people would start insulting each other and making snide comments @ each other.

They'd be calling for "sources" and "evidence" and there'd be lots of links to obscure articles and anecdotal stories about dire consequences, (grandmothers waiting for eighteen hours for an ambulance, single mothers in rat-infested damp hovels,). And on the other side, tales of Fat Cats and Scroungers personally known to the poster.
After 698 posts nothing would have been discussed or learnt and people would be even more certain of the opinion they had before they opened the thread.
That's the way it is.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 06/04/2023 14:00

There are many things I find offensive, these include the current government, the current government's opposition, the Royal Family, the regressive anti-women laws in USA that are trying to get traction in the UK, the state of the NHS, the state of education, tax avoidance, cutting flowers for display purposes, football, influencers...I could probably list tonnes more if I was inclined.

Some entirely rational, some just oddities mostly just my opinion - however the whole point of a country where people are free to debate is that we can discuss them. Forums like this actually allow a fairly unbiased conversation to take place.

Unless divulged you wouldn't know my sex, skin colour, weight, eye colour, hair colour, if I'm disabled, my religion, my financial status. I could enter a discussion without any unconscious bias about who I am undermining what I'm trying to say.

Talk about why you think something is good/bad and have facts to support your position - don't cancel voices that disagree with you but respond with strength. If you can't do that your position and opinion is about as substantial as a sandcastle at high tide.

Some posters earlier were quite upset when I raised them. I wondered if it was a more universal problem.

You forgot to mention the inevitable introduction of a cutnpastova from 2001.
