Could you survive on 1k?

If you had £1000 left after the main bills.

Could you survive on £1000 for food amd petrol and everything else takeaways, gifts, fun.

DH thinks most families couldn't. I think it should be ok. There are only 3 of us and we all live about three miles away from work and school.

My biggest concern would be savings, not being able to build a safety net for appliances needing replaced/car issues/job issues.

we could definitely cut back to £1k for food/fuel & fun but there wouldn’t be savings or holidays or home improvements and I do think in the long term that would bother me

Makesense12 · 06/04/2023 11:18

@coffeeanteac have you got a budget sheet.

Ie does every single penny get allocated each month

bringincrazyback · 06/04/2023 11:18

Bloody hell, check your privilege OP.

Hawkins003 · 06/04/2023 11:18

if that's 1k a month, then yes I could

CleaningOutMyCloset · 06/04/2023 11:19

Easily

GiltEdges · 06/04/2023 11:19

Well our food bill alone is £900 and petrol maybe £100-150 per month, so no.

TokyoSushi · 06/04/2023 11:22

Of course you could!

It would be a bit tricky some months like if you needed your car MOT for example, but just on a standard month, absolutely yes.

StopitSarah · 06/04/2023 11:22

I think some people are missing the point that it’s £1000 for everything other than mortgage/rent and essential bills.

Its not £1000 per month to spend on treats.

Nap1983 · 06/04/2023 11:22

Eh probably not.

Barney60 · 06/04/2023 11:22

Yes easily, i already do.

YungDumbThrills · 06/04/2023 11:24

My goodness, I survive on this WITH bills etc coming out of it!

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 06/04/2023 11:25

I have less than that after rent but before all the other bills. 1k after bills would be living the dream!

It’s ridiculous to speak like this is fact for everyone. If you have high travel costs, then it’s not possible.

My parents thought like this but only ever had jobs within 10 minutes of her house and refused to think everyone couldn’t just be like them. Stupidity.

AuntMarch · 06/04/2023 11:26

@Personyouneedisnannymcphee have you checked you get all you might be entitled to?

HatchedInALaboratory · 06/04/2023 11:26

*their not her

smizing · 06/04/2023 11:27

After all the bills are paid? Hell yeah I could!

BungleandGeorge · 06/04/2023 11:27

You need to define ‘main bills’. I think food and petrol for commuting to work are a ‘main bill’ as they are essential. What about insurance etc? Do you mean 1k for non essentials?

coffeeanteac · 06/04/2023 11:27

GoodChat · 06/04/2023 10:09

If you're having to pay for food, MOTs, emergency repairs etc out of that you won't have much left over for fun each month.

What's his proposal if that's not enough?

Well if has been offered a job for lower pay in something he loves but it would be a pay drop for at least 2 year's minimum.

However he would have a potential to earn more his current job doesn't.

We are in our 40s so not getting younger.

Guess no holidays but obviously many less don't have holidays.

Want to swap? I live off £800 a month BEFORE bills and outgoings!

How many of you? Do you have rent or mortgage?

FiguringLifeOutOneFuckUpAtATime · 06/04/2023 11:29

My total income for a month is approx 1600-1700 before bills, I would LOVE to have that amount after! Just me and 2 young kids in school, I manage to save a little every month, but we live fairly frugally so that definitely helps.

Moaning5 · 06/04/2023 11:30

I don’t want to survive, I want to live !

Yes £1000 is enough for basics like food & petrol. But you’ve said gifts and fun stuff so no, these things are potentially limitless as far as I’m concerned.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 06/04/2023 11:30

Absolutely, if all bills were paid and that was the leftover amount.

PuzzledObserver · 06/04/2023 11:30

BitchBrigade · 06/04/2023 10:23

A huge amount of people have about £200 or less OP. What a totally delusional way of thinking.

Also, Mumsnet seems to have a lot of people here who lie about their wage to make themselves feel better and others feel bad. Take the replies with a pinch of salt.

Just wondering how you know they are lying? Given that it’s an anonymous forum.

I think budgeting and small cut backs for 2 years is a small price to pay for a job he loves that also has longterm potential for better pay.

StopGrowingPlease · 06/04/2023 11:32

A month? We have nowhere near that..
